CHICAGO LOSES OLYMPIC BID....What went wrong?

How sad, in the VERY FIRST VOTING ROUND, this morning, Chicago was the first of 3 cities to be dropped from the list of potential hosts for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.  Tokyo was next to be axed.

That leaves Rio in South America, and Madrid in Spain....My guess is Rio.  South America has never hosted an Olympic Games, so that is a pretty strong pull....

I am wondering what this bursting of the bubble will do to the city of Chicago, and all the peole who were so wrapped up in this attempt to win the games.  I have a feeling that aside from all the plans that will now not come to pass, it will have a real downer effect on the city and its people.  That is sad...Daly Plaza was absolutely stunned when the first announcement came and it was Chicago that was dropped!

In Wisconsin, we were really excited, as we are close enough to benefit from the ripple effect of an Olympic Games.  Hotels, restaurants, attractions all would benefit some from an Olympic Games just 50 miles south of our border.  With hotel shortages, many homeowners would be cashing in, renting out their homes for a premium price, and cashing in on the event...   The Cycling events would have taken place in the Madison area, on an cycling course that hosts the Ford Ironman Wisconsin every September...We were excited about the possibilities of having the Olympics soooo close...

I guess the rock star appearances of the the President and first family, and her royal highness Oprah didn't help...Maybe it actually hurt Chicago's chances?  Maybe the effect of their appearance was "those pushy Americans, trying to WOW us into picking them? Was it overkill?   Who knows,..

Well, we will see what happens now.  No chance in H#$@ we will be going to Rio or Madrid for the 2016 games... Being an Olympic fan since a child, (I remember the games in Mexico City, we got a COLOR TV the week before the games!) so needless to say, I am disappointed...these were games I may have actually seen in some form....a ticket holder, a volunteer on the Madison bike course, who knows....not anymore :(

I am disappointed, are you?  What do you think happened here?

I heard on Dan Patrick's ESPN show that the residents of Chicago didn't want the Olympics to come to town. Is that true?

Yes Pat, I have just heard and am disappointed. My wife is from Chicago so we were really excited about the possibility of hosting the Olympics there. I'm from London originally and that is the site of the next games in 2012. It was certainly not a popular decision in the eyes of many Londoners but, on the whole, I believe it is a good thing.

Pat,

My understanding is that Chicago could not afford to have the Olympics come to town, and that it would actually hurt the already hurting economy.  When you bring events like that to a city, there is additional infrastructure that may be required, etc.  I also believe that it irritated a lot of the local government officials that the President and Oprah were making the case, and not taking attention to their thoughts and concerns.  I think there are bigger things than the Olympics that need the attention of our President.  As for Oprah......

I think Chicago is an amazing city, Pat.  It's too bad that won't be happening.  It would have been a great boost for the city as well as our country.  Chicago is fantastic!

Pat

I heard today that Rio was selected; it would have been nice to have the Olympics that close to Milwaukee

Pat-having lived in Chicago for some forty years and still own a home there, I'm a little disapointed.  I've wanted to attend the Olympics for a long time and I would have gone to Chicago.  Anyway...water under the bridge.  I'm still trying to figure out what Oprah was doing there.  I think Obama did the right thing by going there to make the pitch in person...if he succeeded most everyone would forget about the money spent and other pressing issues.  But he failed to bring it home and here we are.  I'm sure some of the recent bad press about Chicago didn't help.  I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

HAHA...Just heard a funny one...  Chicago politics is just not the same anymore...they were supposed to bribe the IOC (International Olypmic Committee) not the Norwegians and the Nobel Institute!
