 Christmas Lights in Helena AL

I went out a couple of nights ago with my camera to take pictures of Christmas lights, and I've decided I really don't have the equipment I need to take good photos at night.  These were taken with my Panasonic Lumix TZ4 which I got last year when my old camera died.  I enjoy it because it has a wide angle lens and takes much nicer shots than the 5 year old Canon that I had, but it has it's limitations.  Wish I had thought to put a nice camera on my wish list this year, but I'm not even sure what I would want.  Any suggestions?

Oh well, here are a few I took with the Panasonic...

The Helena Municipal Building has lots of little trees and a nativity scene in lights.....

This house is nearby and has a large yard filled with lights......my best picture didn't include everything, but you can see they have lots of fun decorations.

Hi Ann,

You asked if anyone had suggestions. I am a bit partial to SLR cameras since I got mine and I and everyone appreciates that nighttime photography is difficult at best. When taking pictures of fireworks, Christmas lights or city lights, is it very important to have a tripod. The slightest movement is highly exaggerated with night lights.

After the tripod, getting your night time settings set correctly makes a big difference.

And then the camera. If you want to invest ( $$ ) in a good camera that will serve you real estate needs as well provide for capturing some of life's precious moments, I would recommend a Nikon, D-5000 . It has a small body and is lighter. it has some awesome features that make photography really fun. The next better one is the Nikon D-90.There are lesser expensive cameras that will also do the trick  with less features.

Invest some time before money, go online and spend time learning the features that set cameras apart and then maybe a visit a camera store and learn first hand. After you feel you have a good handle on the issue, it might be time to make the investment. Spend some time researching , it will not be a waste of time. There are many good sites that put things into perspective. All the best.

Here is wishing you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2010
