My son is always telling me to ‘slow down', or ‘you need to take a break' or ‘shouldn't you stop doing everything for everyone"?
Well, being a Type A personality, it's hard NOT to be a control freak. Most of the time, I would much rather do things myself than hand them off to someone else. I'm always trying to work things out to make everyone happy.
I just received this little story from a relative in an email and thought it was very apropos. It's adapted from an Aesop's Fable. You may have heard it before, but it's worth reading again.
It was funny to me, but it also rang pretty true. Many of us give 100%, do everything we can for everyone, and try to please as many people as possible. We care about what we do, how we do it, and how we are perceived. I know no one who wants to be disliked.
However, no matter how hard you may try, you just can't please everyone.
Read on...
An old man, a boy & a donkey were going to town.
The boy rode on the donkey & the old man walked.
As they went along they passed some people
who remarked it was a shame the old man
was walking and the boy was riding.
The man and boy thought maybe the critics were right,
so they changed positions.
Then, later, they passed some people who remarked,
'What a shame, he makes that little boy walk.'
So they then decided they'd both walk!
Soon they passed some more people who thought
they were stupid to walk when they had a
decent donkey to ride.
So, they both rode the donkey.
Now, they passed some people
who shamed them by saying how awful to
put such a load on a poor donkey.
The boy and man figured they were probably right,
so they decide to carry the donkey.
As they crossed the bridge,
they lost their grip on the animal
and he fell into the river and drowned.
The moral of the story?
If you try to please everyone,
you might as well...
Kiss your A$$ goodbye!
