My family and I had a great weekend in and around Newtown, Bucks County where I grew up and now live only a few minutes away from in Holland.  On Friday morning, I woke my eldest son up early (6:30 am) and we walked from our house in Tapestry in Holland down to the Village Shires Shopping CenterWe stopped at the Dunkin Donuts and picked up breakfast for everyone.  Since we were going to be taking a little break at the Dunkin Donuts so he could regain his energy (It's a mile and half to get there so a long way for the little man) I decided we'd get a box of munchkin donuts so he could munch on a few while I had my coffee and this way when we got home there would still be some extra donuts for his brother as well.  I finished my bagel and cut my son off after 6 munchkins because he still had a chocalate milk to finish and a chocolate glazed donut with sprinkles for when we got home.  I gave my eldest son the box of munchkins to carry and I grabbed the two chocalate glazed donuts and chocalate milk and we headed home.  It wasn't until we were just across the street from Tapestry that I turned around and realized we'd lost all of the munchkins along the way!  The look on my son's face when he opened the box was pretty funny, but thankfully I had the two big donuts and all was well.  We got home at 8 am and my middle child who's a toddler came running down stairs to enjoy his breakfast with his big brother. A fun start to the weekend that only got better.

For lunch we went to the Newtown Farmers Market, located in the Newtown Shopping Center, which is such a great place to grab some wonderful food from all over the world.  The entire building has a buzz to it because it truely is a market so it is a fun place to sit down and eat because there's so much to look at while you eat.  The options are nearly endless, there's sushi at Akiko Sushi, rolled right there and my wife's favorite.  Ribs or bbq chicken  at Zooks BBQ Barn, my dad actually knows someone who always brings them to bbq's and tells everyone how hard he worked on them, but we've eaten them so many times we know better!  Middle Eastern at The King of Falafel  which has my favorite sandwich in the entire world the Meditteranean Chicken Wrap.  Definitely get the large for a dollar more.  Barbies Soft Pretzels which has more than just pretzels there's hot dogs wrapped in pretzels, stromboli pretzels, sausage egg & cheese pretzels and more.  For dessert there's Riehl's Bakery, or you could grab Goodnoe's Ice Cream to go!  This is just a short list of what's available at the Newtown Farmer's Market, but there's so much more, fresh bread from LeBus, fresh veggies and fruits, fresh fish.  To check out everything The Newtown Farmers Market has to offer just click on the link.  After lunch we were off to Tyler State Park.

Growing up in Newtown, Bucks County I spent alot of time riding my bike in Tyler State Park and catching snakes, frogs, salamanders and other critters with my dad, so I love taking the kids there to wear them out.  We parked just across from the Langhorne Players Club and walked along the work out trail down to the main damn where you can rent canoes from.  There were lots of other kids running about in the water, dogs chasing sticks, and guys fishing.  My wife took our youngest sun and sat on one of the benches in the shade while the rest of us tried to catch fish with our bare hands for about an hour.

The boys wanted to catch a friend for the baby catfish we caught a month ago, but not this time. After about an hour and a half the boys were tired out and we started the walk back to the car.  Tomorrow is one of the best days of the year because we are going to the Grange Fair!

The kids were so excited it was hard getting them to bed, and they were up bright and early the next day way before the Grange Fair opens.  After breakfast we got them bathed and dressed and headed to Newtown to pick up Nanny and Pop Pop.  The Grange Fair is located just off Rt. 413 in Wrightstown which sits just above Newtown.  We started off walking through the animal barns where the kids got to see goats, cows, chickens, rabbits, pigs, alpaca, and even oxen.  After that we headed over to the food vendors where there is all the fair food your heart desires: cotton candy, fries,  popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers, gero's, and of course funnel cake, ice cream, water ice and plenty more.  Many people rave about the bbq chicken dinner which you have to purchase a special ticket for and is served at set times throughout the day.  I can never plan a time to sit down and eat with 3 kids, so I always grab something at one of the vendors stalls.  Then comes the best part of any fair and that's the rides!  The kids spent a few hours running from one ride to the next and since my guys are younger and not tall enough to go an many rides by themselves I was FORCED to ride a few with them. The great part was they never charged me to accompany the kids on the rides!  I thought that was pretty sweet since I was definitely going to ride on some of them anyway especially the humungous slide.  All in all the day wasn't too costly either.  I spent $90 to get into the Grange fair, to feed everyone, get them drinks, and to go on all of the rides.  Not bad for a family of 5 to go out for the day.  Once my guys are a bit taller and can ride on more rides it will be even better because the Grange Fair offers an all week pass to park for $25 and all you can ride wrist band for $40 per kid.  Considering the Grange Fair is open for 5 days that's a great deal.

We ended the day with a bbq at my folks place in Newtown with friends and family.  The kids were running around playing with the Bubble Guns there Nan bought them at the Grange Fair and were playing in the kiddie pool.  It was a great weekend and it was only Saturday night!  We had an awesome weekend in Newtown, Bucks County!  There's always so much to do in our area whether you're single, married with kids, or retiring it is a fun place to live.

Boy does this bring back memories! We moved from Newtown (Newtown Gate) to Coral Springs, FL in 1995. I've been back once, about 5 years ago. It seems the area has grownn and grown. We sure do miss it, except for the snow!

Hi Phil,

My wife would agree with you about the snow as she hates the cold, but the boys and I love to go sledding with the dogs.  I've lived here since I was 8 years old and my dad grew up in Levittown and went to Bucks Community College.  The area has grown a lot over the years since I've been here and even more so since my dad went to college here, but with Philadelphia only 45 minutes away and NY City an hour and a half away we get alot of people who work there but want to live more in the country/ suburbs.  Newtown offers that bucolic country feel amidst small, but fun towns with lots to do so it is quite a desireable place to live which leads to the growth.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for stopping by and I wish you the same!
