ORANGE COUNTY --

Florida Highway Patrol troopers say many drivers don't think the same rules apply when the stop sign is extended on a school bus.

"There's a serious problem here in Orange County about people not stopping for school buses," said Sgt. Kim Montes from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Seventeen-year veteran bus driver Ed Lipsey said he sees it all the time.

"They go right on by flying. They don't want to wait behind me, and usually we are only there 30 [to] 45 seconds getting kids on the bus," Lipsey said.

As part of National School Bus Safety Week, all local law enforcement are helping educate drivers on the Stop on Red, Kids Ahead campaign.

Though many violations are blatant, they said confusion sometimes comes on multilane roads.

The only time you are allowed to keep going is if you are on the other side of a median, but not just any median.  If it's less than 5 feet, the driver would have to stop.

Drivers who pass improperly will get four points on their license, have to go to traffic school and face fines up to $500.

The consequences for a child who may be darting after the bus could be much more severe.
