What Are You, A Sitcom, Drama or Informercial?

What Are You, A Sitcom, Drama, or Infomercial?

when it comes to social media, are You A Drama, Sitcom, or Informercial?

Everyone is using social media to help grow their business these days and it isn't just real estate agents like us either. Accountants, lawyers, and even doctors have incorporated social media into their plans. But as people become engaged on line, many are simply going through the motions without considering how they are being viewed by others and it may be costing them business.

When we first got started on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and different blogging formats, we attended a seminar and got some great advice.

The speaker ( Bruce Hardie ) compared our presence on social media to that of a TV show. Basically, we would be putting out information ( our show ) in hopes that other people ( our audience ) would tune in to watch.  If we did a good job, people would tune in on a regular basis, and also tell others about us. He said commercials were ok every now and then, but concentrate on the show and give away value.  His main point was that we should get people engaged and not just ask for business, and good things will happen.

After taking the speakers advice, we have found that people are appreciative of our efforts, and business has come as a result. We can always use to improve, but we're on the right track.  However, we have noticed that some people, even friends and business contacts of ours, are still missing the boat on how to properly engage in social media.

IS YOUR MESSAGE BEING TUNED OUT?

Are You Being Tuned Out

Just yesterday, I decided to "follow" a company on Twitter that I was hoping would share great information. Instead, I immediately got 2 emails and a call from this company soliciting my business.  In my opinion, any "show" that starts selling before giving gets "cancelled" immediately.

I also just became "friends" with a local agent who requested it, and quickly received what seemed like hourly posts soliciting people to call him if they wanted to buy or sell a home. No interesting statistics, no helpful links, no vaule whatsoever, just pure cold hard sales.

And let's be honest, this doesn't apply just on line either. The same principles apply in person at networking and social events. Have you ever met someone at a function who immediately gives you their business card and proceeds to talk about nothing but themselves? I'm sure their on line presence isn't much too different.

So, as we all move forward, we should all ask ourselves,  "what kind of show am I putting out there?"  Whether you are a news channel, drama, sitcom, or even a game show, that is your choice.  However, if you choose to be an infomercial, you will be tuned out by today's audience and see poor results from your efforts.

On a personal note, we hope you found this episode of our "show" to be helpful and will continue to "tune in" to future posts from us, or find us on other social media sites. We'll promise to save the hard sell approach for the other guys.

What a GREAT blog!!!  I would like to think mine is an infomercial...BUT I am sure I have more elements of drama and sitcom as well!

Hi Dan and Amy...Maybe I'm like Larry King.  I've been around a long time, tend to ask a lot of questions, try to be a good listener, and have a lot of information at my finger tips.

Dan & Amy:

A good blog probably has elements of all of these - sitcom, drama and a little infomercial. I think it is a good idea to mix it up a bit and not become a bore.

Great post Dan & Amy, I was once told that when you are interacting with others on whatever social media venue pretend you are at a business party and act accordingly.  I like your advice better because it takes the concept one step further by inserting strategy into the equation.

What a reminder that we need to think before writing or speaking!  Perception is the reality.

I guess I never thought about it. I just went through my last two days of posts and my personality certainly didn't come through. I normally have a sense of humor, but my twitter certainly didn't show that, maybe I need to change things up to be more like me.

David - I think it's great that you add some comedy. I am a little to cautious when it comes to humor but would like to add some more moving forward.

Linda - Thanks for reading and commenting and happy holidays to you as well.

Sonja - A blend is good to keep people interested. Plus, it's more fun to mix things up when you write.

Angelina - I'll check it out and let you know what I think. Readers enjoy seeing our personality in our posts, so I'm sure you have a lot to add to your blog that makes it unique in your own way.

Kate -  Larry King, now that's perfect, without the suspenders though, right? It always helps to be a good listener, not only in business but in our personal lives as well.

Claudette - I agree, mixing it up is good for both the reader and writer.

Keith - Sounds like you got some good advice. You come across as very professional, friendly and willing to help others, so I'm sure whatever you do personally or on line will be well received.

Sharon - I wrote this post just so people would give it a little thought. Most folks here on AR are great at giving value and helping, but I bet we all know someone who could use a little advice improving the way they communicate their message. Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

Todd - I find this very hard as well in my written communication. I've been told, and not just by my kids, that I have a great sense of humor but am afraid to show too much of it on line for fear that people will think I wouldn't take their needs seriously should they need an agent. Moving forward, I'm going to try to be more ME on line and see what happens.

Dan and Amy - I am terrible. I joined FB, Twitter and Linked In but almost all of my time and effort is AR driven. The FB account is set up for more personal than business. I need to work on that. I haven't even opened my FB for months though.

However, these types of posts inspire me to get it going and make it work. You have to have personality in your theme though.

I couldn't agree more.  I try to just be myself in social media outlets and then also post interesting/newsworthy real estate links on a regular basis.
