Some Statistics on How People Ages 50+ Network

Everybody's doing it....well almost. I recently learned some new statistics on how Americans ages 50+ network on line. That would be 26.6 million of them, or should I say us.

82% are using Facebook

16% are using MySpace

15% on Linkedin

9% on Twitter and 9% elsewhere.

That would be 62% of the 50+ demographic using social media!

So to say that Social Media is just for young people would be inaccurate. You'd better polish up your Facebook page. There is probably a retiree looking for their next Realtor on Facebook right now!

Anyone want to guess on what that 62% wiill become in 2011?

Sanna, this is great that you put this information out here. We all know that the younger guys are using it, but I keep hearing that most 50 are not. I know that this is not true. I see clients, family and friends using it all the time.

I think that a conservative estimate of the increase would be 70% by the end of 2011; however noticing all the 50+ folks with iPhones and iPads...this could be low!

Sanna, I think more and more "older" people are joining Facebook because their kids and grandkids draw them in, it's a great way to stay in touch. I would guess the number will grow to 75% easy!

I'll play. I bet that the total by year's end will be between 82% and 85%, because folks -- that demographic applies to a lot of us! Every day more companies that I use for different products are popping up on Facebook, and if I "like" them there may be a discounted price for an item that I use. On a side note, I heard this morning that NBC is doing a story on the business of Facebook sometime this week. Should be interesting.
