It's a Yo-Yo Industry

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty

We are blessed with a career filled with flexibility, personal choices of how you build your business and the wonderful opportunity to serve others.  Real estate sales is also an industry filled with ups and downs.  How we handle this unsteady emotional environment is one of the defining factors between an average agent, those who toss in the towel and quit from the professional who understands that there are definitely trials and tribulations that can tug us down but joyous moments that elevate us to cloud 9.

As we ride on the emotional roller coaster a professional keeps their focus on one thing ... their clients.  When a contract on a listing terminates, the professional, although personally disappointed, needs to turn their attention to their client's emotion.  Making sure they understand the "why" of the decision and elevating them with encouragement of obtaining a new contract.  The professional outlines the next steps to promoting their home and getting the word out on the now new Active status.  The eye is not on lost commission opportunity but keeping the client feeling good about the care they will continue to receive.  That's what we do... service the listing and client service.

As we experience the highs and lows of real estate sales, the focus off of me to the most important attribute a Realtor has, their client, keeps us centered.

Great blog, and you are absolutely right.

We have to learn to prepare for the downs when we are in the ups so when we are in the downs we don't go broke

- SOLD IS OUR FAVORITE 4 LETTER WORD -

Connie,

I must say I like your post, I will also say I disagree with the YO-YO reference,  This industry is not a Yo-Yo industry unless you choose that for yourself.  This past year I can say it was a bit of a Yo Yo that was by design (actually lack of design). I now have a plan and have put it in place and I am working on being steady.  People aroundme are very steady so we must look inward and see what our business is a Yo Yo. Some people may like that and that is OK. I think its a choice.  Well that is my 2 cents (actually 5 cents)

Pat - it is about the clients and that is what we are here to service.

Henry - ups and downs is just part of our industry but how you handle it defines how you will succeed.

Ken - I agree we can maintain a stable business, I had one of my best years last year by working and overcoming the economic challenge.  But we do have yo-yo events that one minute you have things going well and boom, a minor interruption takes place to disrupt.  You then must pick yourself immediately up to maintain that high level of performance ... a defining ability for a professional that stays and succeeds in our industry.

Thanks to all for visiting my post and taking time to comment!

Hi Connie:

You are so right...

This is definitely a Yo-Yo business.

As hard as it can be sometimes, we need to focus on being positive!

HI CONNIE!  This is such a gentle way of not only re-focusing the professional but also letting others know that they aren't alone out there with listings that expire or don't sell ... and we all experience ups and downs at various times. Very nice! -- Gab

Chris - its those journeys to the top that gives us the goal and feeling of success when reached. Nice to be there more, I agree.

Gabrielle -  I'll confide that I wrote this after my listing that was under contract terminated and the sellers of that home had a contract just accepted on a home double the value .. one they loved!  They were so down about it ... so it was up to me to jump in and get them thinking on the positive.  Two crashed transactions but one client & agent determined to get the job done again!  Thanks for your thoughtful comments, made me feel good.

Connie, it's a roller coaster in terms of the emotional changes - and the financial yoyo can make it a really, really scary way to make a living.  Still, things always work out in the end.

If only all real estate agents thought like that. As a home inspector, I can tell you that they don’t. I’ll do an inspection for a Client and a couple of weeks do another home inspection for the same Client but now s/he has a different real estate agent.
