Feng Shui and the Bedroom bed

The bedroom is considered to be one of the most important rooms in your home in Feng Shui.  Adults spend one-third of their lives in bed and children and teens often spend more time than this.  We should be as certain as we can that the bedrooms are suitable for relaxing and regenerating us as well as for encouraging romance in our lives.

So, what is the first step?

Why of course, de-clutter...put distractions away, knicknacks and such. Only leave what is really important to you.

A Note: if you are beginning a relationship and moving in someone's house making a few changes to the home will bring harmony to the new relationship.  A new bed, new mattress set, bed linens.  These old items hold the energy of whatever transpired in that bed (especially a waterbed).  The bed frame, especially the headboard, represents how you and your partner support one another, so if you want the new relationship to be different, get a new headboard as well as the other things mentioned.

Place your bed in the room before you put other furniture into the room.

Beds should face in favorable positions, the best bed position is diagonally opposite the door.  The occupants of the bed should have a reasonable view of the door and if not then a remedy would be to place a mirror in a position to reflect anyone entering.  Put the bed as far away from the door as possible (making sure it is not in direct line with the door), if this is not possible and your room is smaller, then closing the door at least an hour before bedtime will slow the flow of chi (energy) so your night will be more restful.

Ideally, beds should not be directly on the floor, they should be raised with enough space for air to circulate underneath the bed, and there should be nothing stored under the bed.  A solid headboard offers support and should be higher than the footboard if you have one. However, wicker headboards are alright as well, and actual waterbeds are not advised since the water in them is usually chemically treated and is rarely replaced.  It is best if the headboard is not a triangle as that may encourage triads in your relationship.

Metal beds pull energy into the center and are best suited for someone needing to gather their energy at the end of a stressful day.  Sales people, anyone who sends out energy in many directions during the day may benefit from the metal bed.  One caveat may be that not many metal beds have solid headboards so one has to weigh the benefits of the lack of a solid headboard behind your head.

As well it is best to not place your bed on a diagonal since that creates a triangle behind your head.  If you cannot avoid this placement then the adjustment would be to fill the space with an upshooting plant or a folding screen.  Visually filling in the space wll increase the sense that you are supported as with a solid wall.  Should you need to place the bed in front of a window, it is best to have a solid headboard, or create the illusion of a wall with drapes.

It is best to have the bed in a position where you can have bedside tables on each side, and they should be symmetrically balanced at either side. Two is desirable, one is not.  As well, you should be able to walk around the bed reaching both sides.

Mirrors keep energy active as they bounce it around and make it more difficult to settle down at night.  If you have a mirror on a stand simply turn it around or cover it with a piece of facric while you sleep, and ideally mirrors should not reflect the bed.

Do not overcrowd the bedroom, remember less is more.  Should you have imposing furniture and many pieces, it may make it difficult to rest and relax.  It will seem cluttered and heavy.  Keeping it simple is best.  Electronics should not be in the bedroom, and for clocks battery operated ones are best.  One sleeps so much better when this happens.

Your bedroom should be a place of relaxation and peace, a retreat from your everyday world.  A place where you may sleep well, dream well and wake up refreshed.  Since I have incorporated these elements into our bedroom, each time I enter it, I feel relaxed and peaceful even when I am in a hurry.

Mary Stewart!  I am going to have to work on my bedroom! It looks like a clothes bomb went off in there! I have stacks of clothes I want to give away, stacks I need to put away...etc.. I just need to get off my behind and get started.

I have an carved oak sligh bed. The head board is taller than the foot board but it has sides and no air flow... but we love the bed.

When I get my room in shape I will send you a picture to see what I can to do at least try to be a better Feng Shui room.

Hi Sussie, I would love to see photos of your room when you are ready.  Sleigh beds are good beds, they represent water and promote relaxation and release.  Any bed with flowing or curved lines will help you let go of what happened or you picked up during today and what you do not want to carry forward tomorrow, so they are good beds.  You cannot see under the bed from any direction? When you show the photos make that one of them, if so, perhaps there is a remedy.  You never know.  I am glad the post helped to make you want to get the clothes issues done.  Not easy when you are busy with not only your real estate but family as well. Thank you for the comments and I am really looking forward to seeing it when you are done.

Mary- I've not studied Feng Shui but what you said makes a lot of sense.  Our bedrooms need to be a haven for us after a hard day.  Too much clutter or letting your bedroom become a catch-all for unfolded laundry or other things will only distract you.  Good information.

Thanks Kathy, actually feng shui is a lot of common sense and does not have to be complicated. We all have things we just have to do and one of mine is first thing in the morning I have to make my bed.  If I don't my whole day is off.  Probably more mental for me but it is so in feng shui, creating a balance around you so you can be in balance yourself.  It creates harmony all around us.  Thank you for your comments and I hope you have a great evening.

Hi Mary, I am very interested in what you are writing about. I ordered a headboard a few years ago to match th eother furniture in our bedroom but I couldn't fit it in my Jeep and the delivery fee would have been $90 so I decided to not purchase it. I thought maybe I could make one but haven't done it yet. Your post has reminded me to check out some possibilites. I am looking forward to reading more of your series.

JoAnn, thank you for your comments.  It is all important isn't it and you certainly can make a headboard to your liking, and a solid one helps support you.  I have watched HGTV and the headboards they have come up with, pretty clever some of them, but if you can attach it to your bed my belief is that is better.  Good luck.  I am in the process of putting another article together.

Ellen, I am glad you read the post.  Feng Shui to me is really important and has certainly helped me along the way as it is really all encompassing, not just for your home. So much to know and find out about we clan make our lives a little easier and better.  Thanks again.
