What Your Grandparents Are Doing in Florida in the Winter

By

Ever wonder what draws the retirees to Florida every winter?  Yes the weather's great, but it is much more than that.  What struck me when I first started coming down for a week with my family years ago was how happy the old folks were.  Bicycling, hobbies, golfing, expeditions to the casinos, they were living it up!

They've been called the greatest generation, and they've lived through a lot of hard times this country has endured, which makes it so much more endearing to see them play like they have a second chance at youth, and they do it with such gusto.

In my spot on the Gulf of Mexico, just a little north of Clearwater Beach, we have this little place called Sam's Beach Bar, Pasco County's only Gulf Front restaurant.  Last month, when most of the country was tryng to shovel themselves out of record amounts of snow, their elders were having a grand old time dancing to the live music on the water in the Sunshine state.  Check it out! She reminds me a little of Maxine, this was the Cha Cha Slide but youtube wouildn't let me upload with the song!

When I was a kid growing up in St. Petersburg, I used to ask why there were green benches on each street corner and in the middle of each block.  We had a saying that people retired to Miami and their parents lived in St. Petersburg, and that the green benches were because they couldn't walk from one end of the block to the other without sitting down and resting.  This post brought back some fond memories! :)  Thanks!

She does look like Maxine a little - the expression on the face.  Maxine is my hero, by the way!

Jeanne - same thing here - no snow!  I don't understand how/why ANYONE lives north of I-40!  Better weather = less stress = better moods!

Shuffle board, Kripsy Kremes two for one buffets and pancakes, that what I thought many were doing as they clip coupons and live frugally without a snow shovel if they are from the northern climates.
