A Visit to The Sardine Packing Plant

By
Home Inspector with JRV Home Inspection Services, LLC HOI 394

I love to catch fish, I love to eat fish. One of my favorite little fishies to eat is sardines. They look so nice and neat all packed inside the tin. I even love the tin, well I did when the tins came with the key and roll open top. When you inserted the key and began to roll back the metal, it was anticipa-ya-tion.

Crowded junction boxFinding your favorite fish snack packed in a can is quite fun and tasty. Finding electrical wires packed up tight as sardines is not enjoyable, but cause for concern.

It is always fairly easy to tell when work to a home has not been down by licensed tradesmen. Amateurs do things, well amateurish.

While inspecting a Connecticut home not long ago, it was clear the happy homeowner was a do it your self type. He must fancy himself as the Bob Villa of the block. The house was monument to this mans many, many projects.

Crowded wiringI feel one area above all others should be left to the professional, electrical.

Electricity will hurt and or kill you. Electricity works even when the wiring is done incorrectly. This gives the happy homeowner a false sense of confidence and security that he has done everything right.

The owner of this home had done lots of wiring. He apparently liked to run many circuits as evident by his junction box connections.

They kind of reminds me of fish packed into a can.

Suffice it to say this is not correct.Light fixture

Every work area needs light. The master contractor of the block thought of that too! Check out this hanging work light. Not only is it able to be moved, but its A CFL bulb too. Oh sure there is exposed wiring, but the fixture is near the ceiling, so no worries.

This sardine packing plant needs to shut down for repairs.

James, My previous home was done up by a DIY'er. It took a few professionals to un-do all that good work.

I almost bought a house by a DIY'er and the electrical was one of the biggest problems coming out of the inspection. Note the word almost.

Jim,

Love those boxes. Hey, you had room in light fixture for a few more wires ; ). No capacity issues there.

Dear Mr James,

I believe that has founded a spalling error in yours post. Probably most folks would not notice it, but I is quit good with grammer and spalling.

Armatures do things, well amateurish

I believes that an armature is something found in a small electrics motor. I learned spalling from mr Charlies.

Nutsy

They do look a tad crowded in there.  The worklight, well, even the homeowner knew this couldn't be right.

If your 'armature' is as tightly would as those electrical boxes are packed then the magnetism applied to that armature will really take you for a spin.

Induction. If they understood induction their hair would stand up straight. The AFCI's and GFCI's will be tripping all over themselves.

Andrew, I think that's a planter, not a boat :)

Peter, That is usually the way.

Dawn, Sounds like a very good decision.

Craig, I totally agree, never a dull moment.

Gary, That's a planter :)

Don, That light box could easily fit another 10 or 20 wires ;)

Nutsy, The pit falls of spell check.

Peg, Yep :)

Charlie, Well he did you use a box :)

Nutsy, It's not a spelling error, but a grammatical errors.

Jack, You're giving a lot of credit :)

Robert, If is the operative word.
