What Qualities Make a Neighborhood Desirable? Things You Should Consider

Anyone who’s ever purchased or thought about purchasing a home knows it can be very stressful, with many things considered. Common things we consider are price, getting a home inspection, asking for utility bills and how close the home is to schools, fire, police and airports. All of these things affect the decision on whether or not you will purchase the home.

What many forget to consider is the people already living in the neighborhood.  It seems like a no brainer, but often times we fall in love with a home and don’t investigate what the rest of homeowners in the area are like. To find the perfect neighborhood for your family, consider some of the following.

Talk to the locals

Take a walk around the neighborhood and make some friends along the way. Tell them you’re interested in buying a house and ask questions about the area. If you have kids, ask if many other families in the neighborhood also have children. The people in the area will be honest with you, so be sure to talk to them before moving in!

Explore the area

If you take the time to drive around the area and explore, you may uncover some eyesores. We’ve all had the neighbors that let their grass grow out of control or have animals that roam the neighborhood. A neighbor that lets their property get out of control could make a difference when you’re ready to sell your home, so be sure to look when you buy.

Visit the home at night

Often when looking for a home, we always tend to look at the house during the daytime. When going through the neighborhood at night, you’ll experience first hand, the nighttime activities unseen in the daytime. If you hear loud music or screaming spouses, you might reconsider that particular neighborhood.

Do your external research

Many of us have had the neighbor that likes to store their old, beat-up boat in the back yard or has an oversized detached garage. However, if the neighborhood has a homeowners association, many of these behaviors will not be allowed. With the proper research, you can make sure your neighborhood is welcoming, possessing strong resale attributes.

In most neighborhoods, many of the neighbors are great, but there can always be that “one” who seems to ruin everything. As long as you take some time to investigate you’ll find the home of your dreams with neighbors that turn into lifelong friends.
