Laurel Malvitz and the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources Core Volunteer Steward Program needs your help collecting seeds and removing invasive shrubs in several local State Recreation Areas. During the months of October through December, volunteers are needed to restore and enhance natural areas in state parks and recreation areas. You can assist in restoring some of Michigan's unique natural areas.
I spoke with Laurel today and she was kind enough to send the photos below of previous volunteer activities. According to Laurel; "...We can always use help cutting non-native, invasive shrubs like glossy buckthorn, autumn olive and honeysuckle too!..." Shrub removal is by lopper or saws followed by an herbicide application. (last photo)
According to the State of Michigan DNR website volunteers for each site should "bring appropriate clothing for outdoor work, including long pants, boots, gloves and drinking water. For seed collecting, volunteers should also bring a clean, empty milk jug and sunscreen." Click here for volunteer safety information.
