Part IV- Household Moving: Packing some more

Some of my other articles on moving contained some helpful tips. This one is really boring- moving original artwork and sculptures, securing mirrors, packing small appliances, and last - packing clothes. If you have been through this process before- just skip this article. If not, read on.

Some tips on packing and moving valuable and unusual items. Most of this seems like common sense- but it never hurts to make sure we have the correct material on hand before we start an arduous chore.

Moving Original Artwork and Sculptures

Original paintings are valuable and require special packing when moving. If the artwork is framed in glass, tape the front with masking tape in the shape of an X. The entire thing should be wrapped in bubble wrap and taped shut. A box that is the same size as the artwork should be used to put the art in. Double boxing is a good way to ensure that other sharp objects don't pierce the box during the move. Label the box as fragile art.

Sculptures also need special packing. A box that is at least one-third larger than the sculpture size is needed. Fill one third of the box with Styrofoam chips. Bubble wrap the sculpture and put the sculpture in upright so that is doesn't touch the sides of the boxes. Label this box as fragile artwork, too. Following these techniques will ensure that your items make the move safely.

Moving Securing Mirrors

It is safe to say that everyone has items when moving that require special attention. Items like mirrors like artwork are very delicate and deserve special packing attention. To pack a mirror, place tape across the front of the mirror.  Put it in the shape of an X to keep the pieces in place in case of an accident. Bubble wrap should be put around the mirror with cardboard on the outside. Any loose spaces should be filled with wadded paper. Place the mirror in a flat bow and mark it as fragile and mirror.

Moving & Packing Small Appliances

Packing up your belonging can be a tiring and laborious task, but there are some helpful guidelines to follow when packing. To pack small appliances, you should line boxes with newspaper or towels and linens. You will also need some medium sized boxes. To pack the items, sort the appliances by room. For example, put kitchen appliances like toasters or coffee pots together. Then, put things like telephones and hand held vacuums together. The bottom of the box should be durable and secured with tape. Put newspaper or towels in the bottom to cushion the appliances. Place the appliance in the boxes, grouping them with similar items. Place a final layer of packing materials on top, and seal the box. Don't forget to label the box with the room and items

Moving & Packing up Clothes

Use your suitcases, dresser drawers, use the clothes to cushion other items, and what is left can be shipped in wardrobe boxes. Just mark each box with the destination room and name of the owner of the clothes.

This was kind of straight forward. Next we get to some of the family members. That will be in part V.
