Ideas to save energy, save money and save the planet!

Saving/conserving energy should be a priority for anyone with the responsibility of paying utility bills. That just makes good economic sense. However, everyone who eats, drinks, walks, talks and breathes should also think about the energy we are using.  We can save energy in ways small and big. Take a look at the following energy saving ideas and incorporate as many as you can into your daily life. The earth will thank you and so will your pocketbook.

HVAC (Heater and Air Conditioner)
Regardless of the season, you can always save money on utilities by adjusting your thermostat. It is possible to be comfortable and sensible at the same time. In the summer, set the thermostat to 78-80 degrees when home and make it 85 degrees or higher while you’re out. In winter, set your thermostat between 65 and 68 degrees. In either season, and in all seasons, dress appropriately the season. If you are hot, wear cool loose clothing, and if you’re cold, put on a sweater. An idea not often addressed is the savings achieved in Spring and Fall, when neither heat or AC are needed. Take the opportunity to open windows and adjust the home’s temperature naturally.

Fans and Ceiling Fans
In hot weather,
fans and ceiling fans can help you feel more comfortable when you are in a particular room. Industry experts says that fans and ceiling fans can make the average room feel 5 degrees cooler and use a fraction of the energy that Central Air Conditioners and window units use. In winter, set your thermostat between 65 and 68 degrees.

Appliance Filters
Check the air conditioning/heater filter every month and change as needed. Dirty air filters are very inefficient, preventing proper airflow throughout your HVAC system.  This can cause the unit AC unit or the Heater to run longer. HVAC manufacturers and servicers also warn that not changing the filter as needed can shorten the lifespan of various parts or the entire unit.

Water Heater
Set your water heater to “Medium” or a baseline of 130 degrees. You may be able to set it even lower if your dishwasher has a pre-heater.  Set shorter shower times for everyone in the family.  It’s better for the water, and utility bills, better on the skin and better on a large family’s nerves.

Turn it Off, turn it all off
Turn off all lights, fans, TVs, computers and other electronics when not in use. Electronic appliances are silent users of electricity, even when they are not being used. Electricity is still being consumed to power all components, even the pilot light. The easiest way to control this energy usage is to purchase and use power strips. Cutting power by turning off the power strips really reduces the loss of phantom energy.  Install and use dimmer or motion detector switches where possible. They can reduce energy usage for an area by 40-50%. Don’t forget to dust your light bulbs periodically. Dust can cut 20% or more of the light they emit.
