My memories of kindergarten are few..but as I recall, I was not allowed to attend kindergarten until I was nearly 6. I was forced to stay home with my mom for another year due to the month of my birth.
Sesame Street taught me a lot in those 12 months. Bert and Ernie were my friends and Cookie Monster was my buddy. C is for cookie did not seem to adversely affect my eating habits. Grover was always entertaining and taught me it was okay to make mistakes. And of course Kermit taught me, it is not easy being green!
I am the youngest of 11 and for some reason my mother decided the public school up the street from our house was not for me, so she took me to a private school in what seemed like the next country to attend kindergarten.
I knew no one and I missed my brothers. I wanted to walk the three blocks to school with them but alas this was not to be... At least not until there were some issues with some of the other students stealing my stuff....Yes, private school and thievery. I was appalled (if in fact a 6 year old can be appalled). After much discussion (okay crying, begging and pleading), my mother relented and allowed me to attend the public school close to home. I was still NOT allowed to walk the streets to school. It was considered too dangerous for me even though my brothers would be there with me.
In kindergarten, I learned that milk could be chocolate and cookies dunked in it, were utterly fabulous! Nap time was not something I ever adjusted to. I enjoyed learning to count, playing duck, duck, goose and drawing.
Drawing your family on one sheet of paper is a challenge when there are soooo many! Even the teacher had to ask why I used both sided of the paper. I think she thought I was part of one of those "special" families.
Did these things contribute to my life as an agent/adult?
Let's see.... I still love chocolate, I still love counting, especially money, and if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it might be a goose (and you should run as fast as you can to get home). And if there is not enough room to express your self, turn the sheet over and use the other side!
Yes, kindergarten was a great experience, It taught me I could convince my mom her decision might not be the best even though she had good intentions... That Bert and Ernie would always welcome me back with a smile, Grover would still make me laugh and Kermit was right...it ain't easy being green.
And no matter what, C is for Cookie and that is good enough for me!!
