Flags on the Freeway. What a wonderful thing to do.  Wish the word had spread sooner so more areas had done the same thing.  Reflect, remember the day, the people we lost, the people who survived, and how this Country came together to fight back. Togetherness! we need lots more of that throughout the Country right now too.

In the last week or so, as you drive up Route 395 through Alexandria, into Arlington, and into D.C., you will see something that you do not see every day.  It's on the overpasses.  Almost every one.

A show of patriotism.

A show of solidarity.

A sign of resolve.

A solemn reminder.

Flags on the Freeway:

Flag on the Freeway

In the days leading up to today, the 10 year anniversary (I wish there were a better word, since anniversary connotes celebration) of the devastating terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, American flags have been popping up on the overpasses, especially on the overpasses on 395 -- the major route leading to the Pentagon in Arlington, VA.

No government authority requires these flags.  No committee mandated putting flags on the highway.  These flags are prominently displayed by patriotic citizens who want to remind us all what happened on that horrible day 10 years ago.  Remind us of our resolve in fighting our enemies.  Remind us to never forget and to be ever vigilant.

I will never forget!  On September 11, 2001, I was working 2 blocks from the White House when disaster struck.  I left my car in D.C. and trudged home nearly 10 miles to my apartment in Arlington (just 4 miles from The Pentagon).  The map below shows my route.

Today, I live a few miles further down the road in Alexandria, but merely 8 miles from where the plane hit The Pentagon.  It does not seem far away at all.  In fact, I drive by The Pentagon almost every day (as do thousands and thousands who live and work in the area).  The events of 9/11, though 10 years past, do not seem that far away either.  The memories of that day (as with millions in this country, and perhaps billions around the world) are seared in my synapses forever.

Please take some time today to reflect, remember, and renew your memories of September 11, 2011.

Maybe there will be a Flag on your Freeway!

Bud and Beth, Maybe we should start a new Active Rain group and see how many areas we can get involved to do just this.  I like that idea.

Thanks Robert. It absolutely is.
