Homeless at 101!

By
Real Estate Agent with Endless Summer Realty

What a terrible headline this week about 101 year old Texana Hollis who was put out in the street because her son failed to let her know that he was not making her mortgage payments. Sorry, but in my opinion someone ought to shoot this man! It really makes me wonder who actually took the mortgage out and what funds were supposed to be paying for it. Sounds like someone was living off of his mother and took every last dime until she lost it all. Thank God for good neighbors who were willing to take her in.

The elderly people of America are really in a bind. Social Security and Medicare are threatened, their children, many of them, certainly not all, have turned their backs on the people that raised them because they are just too busy with all of their own business and lives. Many have lost their homes and some, like this 101 year old woman, have children that have taken advantage of them.

God Bless our parents who raised us and gave us opportunities that they never had themselves. We should take note like many foreign countries like Asia and Europe who worship and revere the elderly. We need to protect our Seniors. Take some time and visit the nursing homes and elder care centers. Adopt a Senior Citizen, they have so much valuable life experience to share and would so love the companionship. Let's not leave our parents and grandparents out in the cold. Without them, we wouldn't be here!!

This is terrible! How could anyone do that? I am amazed at the kindness of her neighbors and know Karma will find her son.

It's a very sad story indeed. Hopefully by the time I'm 101 my mortgage will have been paid off.

Diane--My heart cries for this woman and others like her whose children and/or society have chosen to abandon.  Listening to some of the politicians talk about the future of social security and medicare/medicad is rather scarey.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes, it is so sad. I think that her mortgage was paid off and then she took out another for 80k that her son didn't pay or share the invoices. Just kept trashing them. Who does that?? Makes me wonder if she really wanted to take that mortgage out. The article said that she was so disoriented when they put her out. Makes me so sad. Yes, Karma will come in to play for everyone involved, good and bad. Thank you all for the comments.

What a sad story.  I HATE people that take advantage of the elderly.

Dear Diane~

Your compassion shines through in this post. It is a character trait I would look for if I were a Senior person in search of a professional broker who understand and would look out for my interests. As a gentle activist for change with compassion, I am attracted to the idea that we real estate professionals can be a positive force for those in need...if only we think about a challenging subject, as you have here...THANK YOU.

I have tweeted our post and sent it on over to my Facebook page.
