If you aren't in the NH real estate industry you probably haven't heard about the concern of some of our New Hampshire towns being moved out of direct searches in the statewide multiple listing service ( Northern New England Real Estate Network).
Although there are other NH towns affected I will discuss the village that concerns our agency the most- North Conway. Most visitors and even some locals don't know that North Conway is technically NOT a town. Yes, it has it's own zip code and it has it's own fire department, water precinct and even it's own Post Office but it is actually a geographic designation rather than a town. The town of Conway NH encompasses; Conway Village. North Conway, Center Conway, East Conway, Kearsarge, Redstone and Intervale....crazy huh? Most of these villages have their own fire departments, post offices and zip codes ! We like to do things just a tad differently up here in the White Mountains...;)
A few months ago NNEREN ( The Northern New England Real Estate network or the "local MLS" as most know it) decided that in order to keep data integrity and to be consistent with the zip code and mapping guidelines, that they would remove North Conway as a separate distinct town in the search drop downs and add it as a village under 'Conway' the only 'true" town. The local real estate community up here reacted with strong feelings against making that change--We argued that the search function is a customer service provided to the buyers and sellers and that the majority of people think of North Conway as a distinct town. In fact, people are more prone to think Conway is NOT a town and just a shortended version of the true destination of North Conway. NNEREN politely let us rant about this but refused to change. To be fair to NNEREN, it wasn't a unilateral decision. The NNEREN board is made up of REALTOR representatives from around the state ( yes, including North Conway) who voted on this and the vote passed. Currently they have decided to create a task force to look at this concern again with the hopes there can be some compromise...
Meanwhile web searchers on most of the agent websites still ask-- Where is North Conway ?
