The value of a clean car...

So you are meeting your customer for the first time out of the office and they are joining you in your car to look at properties. You are sharp, have your best outfit on, for the ladies, nails polished and hair nice and neat. Your paperwork is fantastic and you are well prepared. Very nice first impression. So now we walk to your car. What do they see and what does it cause them to think? Not every car has to be new, nor does it have to be a Mercedes Benz, but it does have to be clean, really!  A first impression of your car is very important.

Someone who cares for what is visible on the outside of the car probably takes care of what is not visible, under the hood. Safety is definitely an issue for many and so you want to make sure that people know that your auto is safe to ride in. If you have a bumper hanging or dents in the fender people will wonder how they got there. Was it due to your poor driving??  Also, cleanliness, very important. Your customer has to sit on that seat!!! Make sure that the upholstery or leather is clean for them.

That they have somewhere to put their things and also their feet. If you have old water bottles, papers and notebooks and your children's lunch box along with the dog's chew toys laying about, you will turn your customer off quickly. Your car is your second office and it should always give a neat and clean appearance. It is surely an impression of you!! Smells are another huge thing! Many people have allergies or sensitivities to many smells. Lots of cologne, the strong odors from cigarettes or even those rear view mirror hangers can really make your customer want to bolt. Several hours with a smell that is annoying to them will make them concentrate on nothing else.

A box in the trunk with things that they may need during the day is also helpful and an added bonus. First aid kit, heaven forbid but they do come in handy. Cooler with water. Box with tape measure, extra pens and notebooks, maps and more will all come in handy at some point. Better safe than sorry! So, next stop the car wash. Clean that car and do you and your customers a big favor. I know that they will appreciate the effort and you will show them a better side of you! Every little bit helps and this is a big thing when showing property!

I have to agree that it makes a good first impression. I've had people ask me about my 'not new' car & I always smile & tell them 'we can take your mercedes if you wish'.  Like all realtors have to drive Jaguars, etc.

Diane, you only get one chance to make a first impression and having a dirty car is not going to impress anyone.  I like your list of items to have in the car.  I also like to have a few snacks sometimes people start to get crabby or don't really see the property if they are hungry.  --Krystal

That reminds me I have to get my car cleaned today. With three children all aged under 8 years old keeping the back seat in pristine condition is an issue....

Diane,

More than three decades ago, I was looking for a REALTOR to list my spec homes on Long Beach Island, New Jersey.  I made an appointment, met the agent, and noticed the food trash and litter on the floor of the car.  I thought about how that would look to a prospective buyer, and hired a different agent.  I'm suggesting this for a feature!

Diane, I have to admit that I fall a little short in this category.  Sometimes the floor in the back of my car looks like a bit of a fast food and coffee cup scrap heap. I always clean if before driving customers anywhere, but if something ever came up on the spur of the moment I'd be pretty embarrassed.

Diane....I totally agree....but I have to confess....sometimes I get busy and don't take the car to get washed but I never have my car so messy that I would be ashamed of it...it may not be spic and span...but it's decent! and at least the first time I meet a client I take it to the car wash!

A clean car is so important!

I had a friend do some truck repair at a very discounted price. While he had my truck he left the windows down and the inside of my car got wet. My leather seats which already had creases got very wet when they dried the the creases turned to cracks and ripped open.

I didn't tell him anything but that was the last time I sent my truck there to be repaired. Now I am having to get that repaired so I didn't save any money at all.

Make sure the inside of your vehicle doesn't make you look like a pauper..
