Is it wrong to throw away your childrens Halloween candy?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Properties

That is the question we discuss around my house. We have 3 little kids who were out gathering candy for a few hours this past Wednesday. Our family ended up with a huge basket full of chocolate and assorted other goodies. As responsible parents we would never buy 10 pounds of chocolate for our kids to nosh on. We are trying to decide how to get rid of all this candy without causing an uprising. I think we should throw it away! Do you think I'm right or should we try to smuggle it out a few pieces at a time to our office?

OK, first of all, our local fire department will x-ray it for free to see that it's safe for consumption...Secondly, it's one time a year.   Geeze, let the kids have some fun... I just told them that iif they ate too much and they got sick, I told you so...How are the kids supposed to learn...It's once a year...til Easter...let them be kids and have fun...they have to learn...will you still be worried when they are adults...I mean if you talk to them and tell them what will happen if they eat to much candy...do you even have to post this blog.....amazing.

Smuggle or have them share it with others.  Never throw good food away, that would be sending the wrong message.

I used to put it all in one basket and then after dinner each night if they had eaten well they got a treat from the basket.  As they got older well they kept the rule going amazingly enough and now they don't binge on sweets like some kids I see.  Set an example with it don't throw it away.

I am for the get rid of it school of thought,,,I was a single parent with 4 sons, I just told them to pull 10 or so pieces, and the rest was gone.  I agree with not throwing good food away... buckets of candy does not qualify as food. Our kids learn from US that anything in moderation is OK, but in excess its going to have costs, our health suffers from such a sugar overload.  Hope this helps, it made sense to my kids, and they are telling their kids the same thing.

OK, how about this school of thought...don't throw it away, give it away...to the kids who have nothing...couldn't dress up, and stayed home...they might enjoy a candy bar...or two...

I throw away and they don't notice.  I am sure that won't last for very many years, but while it does- I am saving their teeth and my sanity.

How about donating it to a worthy cause...the salvation army and other places that feed the homeless could probably put it to good use!

My children are grown.  But I can't remember having much trouble with it.  We combined all the candy and shared between all of us.  The first few days I had to limit how much they had, then they lost interest.  Almost every year I ended up  throwing away the rest and they didn't even care.  I rarely gave them candy outside of special occasions anyway, and maybe that's why they lost interest in it.

I'm with the smuggling.  It might only be once a year but will last for months.  I remember not having soda in the house for my children and how annoyed they got, now they are finding out the damaging effects of it.

I'll be taking all the candy to the VA Hospital to pass out to the patients during our Monthly Visit.  My daughter OK with the plan but I've caught my son hiding candy all over the place.  We have many VFW members who are bringing in their extra candy to send with us.

I love all this chatter about wasting candy, I was talking to my son, who reminded me to think back when we used to be with boy scouts and donate canned goods and fruit to the churches and homeless. Candy is not helping anyone but the candy makers and sellers of diabetic medicines. I am not talking about a piece of candy here and there, but the sugar rush that happens to kids and adults from binging is very unhealthy and sets our children up for patterns of failure.

Hi All,

It's a few days later. I have eaten way too much candy. I have to get to the gym tomorrow and start working out before the next round of holidays kicks in.
