Hey Na Na Na Na Na Goodbye Facebook

This is it for me, farewell cruel FACEBOBOOK. Facebook has announced how they track people as follows:

•The company compiles tracking data in different ways for members who have signed in and are using their accounts, for members who are logged-off and for non-members. The tracking process begins when you initially visit a facebook.com page. If you choose to sign up for a new account, Facebook inserts two different types of tracking cookies in your browser, a "session cookie" and a "browser cookie." If you choose not to become a member, and move on, you only get the browser cookie.
•From this point on, each time you visit a third-party webpage that has a Facebook Like button, or other Facebook plug-in, the plug-in works in conjunction with the cookie to alert Facebook of the date, time and web address of the webpage you've clicked to. The unique characteristics of your PC and browser, such as your IP address, screen resolution, operating system and browser version, are also recorded.
•Facebook thus compiles a running log of all your webpage visits for 90 days, continually deleting entries for the oldest day and adding the newest to this log.
If you are logged-on to your Facebook account and surfing the Web, your session cookie conducts this logging. The session cookie additionally records your name, e-mail address, friends and all data associated with your profile to Facebook. If you are logged-off, or if you are a non-member, the browser cookie conducts the logging; it additionally reports a unique alphanumeric identifier, but no personal information.

WHAAAT?

No wonder I was getting emails from Facebook asking me why I hadn’t logged in lately. They were watching me!

So my solution was to go into Tools on Internet Explorer, then Privacy settings, Manage sites which are never allowed to use cookies, and put Facebook in .Guess what, Facebook no longer allows me to log in. I’m Free, I’m Free!!!!

Hi Carolyn, Interesting information.  I can understand why someone would want to leave facebook for various reasons.  The hard part for me is not being able to check in on some of my friends who are too busy with work and family to catch up individually. I feel like need to stay in touch even if it's the little things.  It's the price we pay I guess.  Happy Thanksgiving Carolyn.

Christine-You have to weigh the good and the bad, I guess, then go with your decision.

Gita--I never had a business page, and now have been scared off even the personal page.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Vickie--Not having family nearby, I didn't have any idea people got together on Thanksgiving and read Active Rain! How about that! Glad I could spread the word to your family.

Lisa-I have been a reluctant fan, now not even that!

Carolyn - Interesting information.  I'm probably one of the last people on the planet that does not have a Facebook Page, and while everyone keeps pushing me to get one, more Google Juice, you've given me something to really think about before I change my non-Facebook status.

Kathy--You are quite welcome!

Wallace--It doesn't really matter how little you use it, they still track you 24/7.

Laura--You were wise to hesitate!

Ross, I don't think it has anything to do with what sites you visit, just the fact that someone is watching you and figuring out what kinds of ads to send you.

Carolyn ~ this is amazing .. talk about an invasion of privacy!  They know far too much about us and the sad thing is, more and more people just keep signing up.  I put very little time on FB and will even less now that I've read your post!
