Attic stairs should ONLY be installed by a professional.

Incredibly, this homeowner just cut a hole in the ceiling.  He made no attempt to secure the joist ends, or frame out the area where the attic stairs were to be installed. This scared the hell out of me, I walked very carefully under the attic stairs every time I went down the hallway. The ceiling around the attic stairs was also sagging slightly. Wow, what a surprise!

Jamie, did you go up the stairs?  The picture shows that the stairs are down?  I just love do-it-youselfers.

Yes Joseph, I did go up the stairs. But very carfefully and with much hesitation.

I don't think I would have taken my 200 pound frame up those stairs.  Totally ludicrous.  Yet another example of the big box stores telling the homeowner that "You can do it!".  People become professionals so they can do things for others, for money, that others lack the knowledge, forethought and/or experience to do properly.

I agree a professional should have done this job. I think sometimes the do-it-yourself is not what TV says it should be. The proper know how, supplies and tools are an indication that a professional should have been called to do this job. This is an accident waiting to happen.

Great photo's Jamie.

Jamie, quit being a schumutz.  With that attitude you're going to run both Home Depot AND Lowes out of business.  They thrive on the "You can do it and we can help!" sales motivation.

I don't climb the ones I think are crappy.  My little giant knockoff fits right up in there sideways to the attic stairs.  I like to have something under me that has a good probability of NOT failing under me.
