Thank A Teacher... This Is National Teacher Appreciation Week! May 7 - 11th
I may be just a bit biased, but I believe we cannot thank teachers enough for the jobs they do. I'm sure we can all think of a teacher who was special to us or important in determining the direction our lives have taken us. Where would any of us be without the incredible teachers who impacted our lives for years and years? And most of the time, they simply don't get the recognition they deserve.
Sure, most teachers work week days from about 7:30 am to about 4:00 p.m., as well as get holidays and summers off. Sounds pretty cushy, right? What a lot of people don't realize is that most teachers also spend hours in the evenings and on weekends preparing lessons, correcting work, doing research, evaluating students, generating reports and grading. Then there are parent meetings, staff meetings and district meetings outside of class time. During summers and holidays, most teachers have to or choose to take continuing education and/or enrichment classes (at their own expense). The list goes on.
Believe me, most teachers work as much as, if not more than, most of us and get paid considerably less to do so. But they do it anyway and they do it for the satisfaction and fullfillment they get from the children they help. When was the last time you spent six or seven hours in a room with 30 plus kids? The teachers I work with are positively amazing in the patience and compassion they show to their often challenging students.
So take the opportunity this week to thank a teacher for all she does. Send a simple gift to school with your child or grandchild. If you don't have kids send a card or donation to your local school. Send a note or email to a former teacher of your own. It's time to stop taking teachers for granted and give them the recognition and thanks they so richly deserve!
