Walking on the water with the Whales in Maui!

By
Real Estate Agent with Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers R(S)54097

When I am talking about walking on water, it is not the experience that Peter had with Jesus. But in their day if they had stand up surfboards it might have been a form of transportation. Some of my clients and new good friends excepted my offer to a morning stand up paddle session in Makena Landing on Maui. On Maui we call this a board meeting.

Sometimes it involves windsurfing, but today its a trip out to visit the whales. We had a crew of about six of us including my wife and we headed out about mile. It was a beautiful day in Makena Maui. We had been out for about half an hour and no sighting. Then we had an eye opener, a pod of whales showed up directly under us.

If you have seen the movie life of Pi where there is this giant whale that cruises under their boat and its an amazing moment. Well that was it. We were surrounded by a large pod of whales. I looked under my board and a hugh whale was swimming right under me, I had chicken skin, it was a magical moment.

My friend Tom took this picture, it was mind blowing having these hugh creatures swim right under us, they were every where. There fins glow in the clear blue water.

This is our friend Annie just taking the morning in slowly. We each looked at other in amazement just taking the experience in.  As we headed back to shore whales were breaching every where, sun was out and everyone was happy and pleased with the morning. My clients purchased a home in Maui Meadows above Wailea from me a couple years ago. So we were off to their home for coffee, bagels and a dip in the pool.  All in all it was a successful board meeting an a another great day on Maui.

GOOD MORNING STEVEN!  What an experience! I'm from the Big Island, and often would fly over to Maui during this season to see the whales - anyway, I hear the paddles attract the whales - so what a board meeting to have had!

WOW!  I think that experience would both frighten and amaze me.  I'm so glad that you had this experience and were able to take and share a picture with us.  Amazing.

Steven,  Amazing story.  We try to get to Hawaii every year, usually the Big Island although Maui is a favorite as well.  There is simply nothing like it.  Maui gets the press for the whale watching, and rightfully so, but the Kohala Coast on the Big Island is an great place to see these beautiful animals.  I remember having dinner one evening at KPC at the Hilton Waikoloa Village and the whales were everywhere, it is a memory I will never forget.

Excellent sharing and great food for thought adventure too...Amazing these whales can come and go and respect others as they do...My sharing is I had snorkeled and had two giant manta rays about the size of a small boat just casually flap on by me underwater. I was shook up until I realized they were just being themselves. Hawaii remains a place of interest for me...thank you

Aloha Gabby, Nice to hear from a local girl. I love the whale season, my wife an I try to get out and paddle to check out the whales. I did see a video clip from yesterday of a 10ft tiger shark crusing checking out a kayak. If I can I like to avoid them.

Aloha Christiansen Team, Actually when I saw this giant under me I was amazed, and my inner voice said you need to get out of the way. On the big island a week ago a kayaker was slapped by  a whales tail and busted up his kayak. I am more concerned about tiger sharks.

Michael, a morning or afternoon board meeting can consist of a good surf session with the boys made up of lawyers, painters, contractors, cute girls and turtles. Windsurfing is a fast pace power meeting, it actually works Maui attracts thrill seekers of all kinds, land and water from all over the world.

Aloha Scott, the Big Island is beautiful, I love the Kona coast, a very special place.

Aloha Richis, That is a cool story did you get any pictures of the rays. They are amazing, once I had one jump out of the water next to me while I was paddling out on my surfboard, I just about jumped out of my skin.

Aloha Ferando, Sometime a safer way to view the whalers is from a boat. As they say in Maui, Lucky we live Maui!

I panicked as I never seen something so big so close and it snuck up on me and there was no where to go and I was alone. As I tried to get away, I saw how it could overtake me and I just surrendered to it. What did the twin Rays do? Didn't even notice I was there as they glided past me...City boy swimming and learning. No pics but a life experience logged...thank you

Richie, pretty amazing to have wild creatures surprising us. I bet you will never forget that encounter. Some years back on the island of Lanai my wife and I swam in the middle of 100 dolphins it was one of those moments you are describing. Not bad for a city boy Richie, going with the flow is sometimes the best thing to do.

Aloha Steven- I have always wanted to see the whales but not sure if I'd want to get that up close and personal.  We do see the paddle-boarders off our coast especially on the weekends but no whales.  We did see some dolphins last week.  You, sir, are very lucky.

Steven, while I think that would be pretty awesome, wasn't it scary? Will whales hurt you? I guess, they're not like sharks, huh?

Aloha Kathy, hmm I guess its the thrill of being amoung these beautiful creatures.

Aloha Tammie, Is it scary, yes and no. There is always the chance they will launch out of the water, but when they just show up out of no where, you just relax and take it in. Actually I don't think they would want to harm you, its just if your in the wrong place at the wrong time. Playing in the ocean, doesn't matter if your windsurfing, or surfing big waves, or doing downwinders on stand up boards, there is always the element of risk, but you only live once.
