Want to see the market heat back up??? Drive American!!!

By

I have a little beef I need to get off my chest. The other day I was talking with a local Realtor and we were discussing the current market. She was complaining about our local economy in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area and talking about how everyone is leaving the area because they are losing their jobs and there are no businesses coming in to take their place. As I am listening to her I look over to see what kind of car she is driving....A LEXUS!! Just out of curiosity I ask her what cars she has other than the Lexus in her garage. A BMW, Honda and Infiniti is the answer. At this point I lose my composure and I ask her if maybe she is part of the problem and not the solution. We live in the automobile capitol of the world where a majority of the people that live in our area are connected to the auto industry and everwhere I look I see foreign cars being driven and not domestic. I don't want this to be a political rant but I have had enough of these Realtors who are not making money in this market complaining about this economy and they are driving foreign cars. More than 50% of my clients are connected to the auto industry and I would not be caught dead driving up for a listing appointment in a foreign car. The domestic car industry is at the top of the customer satisfaction ratings now and make just as good of a car....there is no need to drive a foreign car when our livelihoods depend on the survival of the domestic car industry.

Am I the only one that feels this strongly about this subject? Should I step down from my soapbox and loosen up a little bit? Am I ignorant in my thoughts? I would love to hear your comments.

Until you convince me otherwise I encourage you to support our economy and our local clients and DRIVE AMERICAN!!!!

When America starts producing a car that equals the service my Audi does then I will consider it.  In the 80's I bought American and had cars that would give me maybe 75,000 miles of service.  I bought an Mercedes and drove it 200,000 miles without any major problem.  I then switched to Audi and same service.  So before you badger folks lets be sure the product you endorse can equal what is out there.

I would love to drive American if I could find a car that was reliable and held its value. It is not about driving a car because it is American, it is about the quality of the product. Maybe we need to learn something about building cars.

The last  GM car that I owned in support of the American car industry was a lemon and I ended up in the hole to get rid of it. New engine at 80,000 miles.

GM would not even stand behind their product.  I think I would tell your clients especially if they are from GM to build a better car and then Americans would buy them.

Missy,Thanks for your comment. I am all for free choice but I don't want hear people driving foreign cars asking why our local economy is hurting.

Dick, Afraid I am not badgering anyone. Overall Mercedes and Audi rate in the middle of repair ratings. That is fine and you are free to choose any car you wish...and my car is BETTER than your car not equal.

I tried.  I purchased my first foreign company vehicle in 2005.  However, when I last shopped for a vehicle, the same SUV based on features, size and power was priced on average $1500 to $2000 more for the American vehicle.

If American companies and American workers want to compete, they need to start competing.  Americans who buy foreign vehicles are fed up with subsidizing union members' benefits that far exceed those of the American automobile buyers.

The $2,000 I saved for my vehicle paid my health insurance last year.

Anne..Sorry to hear about your experience with GM. I had a Pontiac Bonneville at one point and had problems with GM and the car. I bought a Cadillac CTS a few years back and had a great experience with GM and the car. Down the road give domestic another chance.

Picking your style of automobile is similar to picking the area of town you wish to live in!  We are of the mindset that quality overrides quantity.  I'm not syaing that American made automobiles are not of quality but as stated above everything anymore is outsourced.  We all have a little bit of "foreign" in us so to speak.  I am of Irish and Italian decent but am true American all the way!  I drive a Nissan and have for many years.  They are a better built and more reliable automobile! By the way...what do you drive!!!

Very interesting post!  I am anxious to see how far this goes

Kelly, That is the point of this post. Not to tell people what to do but see what your views are on the subject.  I drive a VOLVO S60R. Sweedish but a Ford Product. I will only drive a manual transmission and trying to find a domestic car with4 doors that is sporty and has a stick is difficult. My last 4 cars were....Cadillac CTS-V,Lincoln LS and before I got the stick bug...two Pontiac Bonnevilles.

Great post, however i am sure you will hit a nerve with it. I will only buy American cars and I think the quality has come a long way over the past decade or so. We all need to buy more American made products, not just cars. It is the right thing to do.

Have a great weekend and happy selling!!

Brad...Isn't that the point of a blog. To hit a nerve and have a frank and open discussion about what is going on in our community and marketplace? Thanks for your input. Have a great day.

Wow, Great post David.  I for one also refuse to drive foreign cars.  I hate to hear about "I bought an American car in the 80's and it only lasted 80,000 miles.   The 80's????  I had a friend who insisted on only buying Toyota because the last American car that they owned was a Dogde Aspen back in the 70's.  Isn't this 2008?  I have a Chevy Tahoe with 150,000 trouble free miles that replaced a Chevy Blazer that had 300,000 miles on it with no rebuilds EVER.

As for the comment Finally, the unions have hurt  MI by their wages, benefits etc... That is why so many parts etc... are being built overseas.    THIS MAKES ME ILL.  The unions are fighting for a living wage and safe working conditions and the companies want to take all of the profits.  The unions are not the reason that the auto industry is going down, it is the folks who drive the foreign cars that are more responsible than the unions.  The last time that I looked, the people working overseas building foreign cars are NOT buying real estate in Detroit and the folks that are losing their jobs in Detroit are the ones that are suffering.

There was a time when I would have agreed with you David. Today I don't think it makes much difference. American car makers use all kinds of parts made in other Countries. They also have plants outside the USA. (Many Ford pickup trucks are made in Canada) Foreign cars are being made in America. Today it is hard to say what is American made and what is foreign. The line between the two is very blurry. By the way I am still driving a car made by an American Company. (Ford)

Jeff...I only have one thing to say to you.....YOU DA MAN!!!! Great response. You are saying what I am thinking. I was also thinking that these so called "horrible" unions are the ones that are fighting for the blue collar worker to be able to make a living and be able to buy a home which keeps me in business. You shouldn't just be able to afford a home only if you belong to the lucky sperm club. Have a great weekend.

Hank..Thanks for your input. I agree that it is more difficult to say what is made where but when I look into the eyes of my clients from the big three I want to know that I have done everything I can to help them keep their jobs.

In a previous life I was a union representative for the United Steelworkers local 6787 in Indiana.  We worked in the steel mills and saw the effects of UNFAIR foreign competition.  The foreign companies do not have EPA issues, standard of living, SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, and fair working conditions so they can build them cheaper but NEVER pass the savings on.  The fat cats get fatter and don't care who gets in the way.

I would suggest that the UNION bashers take the time to meet a father who just lost his job due to it going overseas, meet his children who depend on him and see if that changes your mind.

As far a automobiles, I challenge anyone to show me how a new car from Japan is any better in 2008 than a new car from Detroit.  As a matter of fact, in the late 80', Detroit used the technology from Japan to make the American cars just as good if not better.

BUY AMERICAN CARS BUILT BY AMERICANS!!!!

Rick..Thanks for your comment. We are extremely lucky to live in a country where we have the right to choose the type of car we drive. I also feel lucky to live in a country where we look out for each other and have pride on our workmanship. Have a great day.

Rick..You are right, you do have choices.  if you choose to drive a foreign car made by foreign employees, don't complain when the economy is in the toilet  I know people in Michigan who have lost their jobs due to foreign automakers who do not have to pay a living wage.

wow! So many people missed the point. I drive a Chrysler Pacifica and my wife drives a Toyota prius because those are the cars we liked. We live in California and my car choices do not have a direct effect on my market place and this is only the 2nd American car I have owned.

David was saying that in Michigan, you should not drive a foreign car and complain about the local economy! I could not agree more. Just try and take the local GM mid level executive out to see property in your Nissan.....  Good luck to you.

I live in Sonoma county and I am sick of any business that has "wine country" in the title but I don't share that with those businesses. I don't drink at all and I still make a point to understand the wine industry because it is a major part of the local economy. I would be the first one to suggest that a Sonoma County wine is far superior to a Napa wine or a french wine and it has ZERO to do with the actual superiority of the wine (which is highly subjective), it has more to do with pride in my local area and my local economy.

Would you go to the local cheese shop for advice and then tell them "Thanks for the advice, I am now going to go order from cheese.com with your great advice"?

I root for my kids high school football team over other high schools too! How wierd is that. If i lived in Michigan, as a mortgage professional, I would drive an American car and so would my wife.

Thanks for the thought provoking
