The media

I really like my profession but get very frustrated with the bad press.  Yes, we all know that the days when houses sold in a day or two for a price about the listed price are gone.  I must say I am really enjoying the pace of the housing market now.  Buyers now have choices and educating sellers is now a very important part of our job.  I just feel that the media is constantly bringing the housing market down.  Almost everyday there is something in the media about how bad it is. I feel it doen't really help anyone.  I feel very badly for the many people going through pre-foreclosure and foreclosure.  This is an issue facing every community all over the United States.  I am a very positive person by nature and really have only great things to say about todays market.  I am finding that the sellers are getting better about understanding our new market and are pricing their homes to sell.

Christine - Profound words and fantastic positivity you are showing.  I agree who cares about the negative press they are doing but trying to bring in more negativity.  Negativity breeds negativity and there are always people buying and selling houses everyday regardless of what the press thinks.  Way to keep positive!!

Don't read the papers or listen to the doomsayers......20 years ago my first broker and mentor told us ' not to read the news' that it would just colour our outlook and take away our hope.........'...........and he was right.........!  I don't always know the latest news forecasts...........but people buy and sell houses in all markets, and they prefer to work with Realtors that are positive !

I agree with you Christine. Sellers need to understand that the market has changed and they may not get what they expected for their home. Welcome to ActiveRain.

For the past 25 years, I've been buying and selling property.  The golden rule has always been it takes up to 5 years to realize a profit in residential real estate.  I try not to get sucked into the media hype!  Keep that positive attitude going.

I couldn't agree with you more.  When the buyers (especially first time buyers) are always hearing about how bad things are, OF COURSE they're not going to do anything.  How many times can you listen to that?  Homes are still selling so that's positive!  We should focus on that!

Don't follow the news?  Who are you going to listen to?  Lawrence Lun?  I think the only reason he predicts an upserge in the market is because the good economist jobs at Move, Inc. were filled last May when his predecessor predicted a 2% decline in the market and had to hit the pavement.

Perhaps the problem is that although there is alot of "bad news" agents are so concerned about being negative that they don't take time to observe trends and adjust their business plan accordingly.  If you don't know trends in a changing market, you will over price homes every time and curse buyers for low-ball offers.
