Think this is great news for bikers!
Auburn Mayor Bill Ham offers high praise for Chewacla State Park’s newest attraction.
On Thursday, several dozen people – including many mountain biking enthusiasts — met at the upper pavilion to celebrate the opening of a new six-mile trail. It was made possible by a Recreation Trails Program grant through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
Ham commended ADECA. He also praised the dozens of Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers (CAMP) volunteers who helped with construction, calling it one of the “most amazing volunteer projects” he’s seen in Auburn.
Once the ribbon was cut, bicyclists were eager to trek the new machine-cut trail. The MTB Project states on its website that the trail features a number of berms, drops, rollers, table tops, wooden features and rock options.
“There is enough spice to entertain even the most experienced rider,” MTB states.
The grant for trail construction was awarded in 2012, with work beginning in September 2014. Philip Darden, CAMP president, said approximately 50 volunteers worked on the project.
“Sometimes, people were taking time off of work – evening during lunch breaks where they could work an hour at a time,” he said.
Darden said Chewacla has benefitted from the 23 miles of trails it now offers. He said there are trails for all skill levels.
“We’re well on our way to having another banner year at the park,” he said, referring to park visitation.
The trail opened in time for this weekend’s Southern Mountain Biking Summit. Mountain biking enthusiasts from around the Southeast gathered in Auburn to discuss strategies to enhance the sport.
Bicyclists begin riding the new six-mile trail at Chewacla State Park in Auburn. The trailhead is at the upper pavilion.
