A major redevelopment effort is taking place in North Charleston, SC. From Remount Road to the Neck area near old Baker Hospital, North Charleston is reinventing itself in a series of massive redevelopment projects. One such development is the Mixson Avenue project in the Park Circle area, which is being developed by the award winning I’On Group.

I recently had the pleasure of hearing Vince Graham founder of the I’On Group speak at an AMA (American Marketing Association) meeting in Mount Pleasant, SC. Vince is a passionate advocate for advancing human-scaled urbanism and Mixson is a prime example of that.

Mixson is roughly 43 acres and is bordered by the neighborhoods of Liberty Hill, Palmetto Gardens, and Olde North Charleston. The Mixson Neighborhood is currently in the planning and engineering phase, although substantial demolition is nearly complete. Over time, this project will have services, shops and workplaces along Durant and Mixson Avenues, creating a walkable destination for many historic North Charleston neighborhoods.

Great urban neighborhoods have a variety of people living, shopping, and working within their midst. That diversity of people is essential to thriving cities, and to North Charleston.

What a great idea! I think that the full integration of solar, wind, and hydro systems will increase the worth of the redevelopment. You could add some UGE vertical axis wind turbines in the right places and most likely reap the benefit of renewable electricity. Also perhaps add in some community shared geothermal systems or solar pv systems to increase independant electric generation as well as grid neutrality. And while your at it a rain harvest system for every building would do nicely.
