City of Water Day

The big day is coming up fast! If you live in the Hoboken area, you are probably already involved in some sort of preparations. City of Water Day, on July 16, promises to be the event of the season.

This free family fun day is a cooperative event. The two main locations are Governor’s Island, in New York, and Maxwell Place Park in Hoboken. There are also many In Your Neighborhood locations around New York Harbor. In fact, you can sign up to host an In Your Neighborhood event, if you want to.

Here’s a link where you can get involved in the Waterfront Alliance. You can also use this link to sign up to sponsor an activity at the festival in the main two locations (Governor’s Island, and Maxwell Place Park). Also, here’s a link to a list of some of the events occurring on the New Jersey side of things.

What kinds of activities are there? Well, you name it, and you’ll probably see it. There are art projects, science projects, and numerous on-water activities, like kayaking and paddleboarding. Most of the large boathouses in the area are participating, in alliance with the Water Trail Association which promotes safe boating practices. You can have free tours of any kind of boat you can think of. They’ll have paddle boats, tall stacks, gorgeous yachts, fireboats, and lots of others. Here’s a link for details on rides and tours.

Of course no festival worth its salt would be complete without lots and lots of food and drink! Many of your favorite restaurants, and specialty food vendors will be participating. If you want to be a food vendor, the above link for the Waterfront Alliance will steer you to the right place.

Disney is in charge of the children’s activities department. You know that means lots of fun. The list of activities hasn’t been published yet, but it is sure to mean fascination for your little ones. There will most likely be make-up artists to transform them into their favorite Disney characters. The  competitive activities usually stimulate their imaginations. You can check back at the main site in a week or two for more details.

The highlight of City of Water Day will be the Cardboard Kayak Race. Each team of up to 6 people is provided with cardboard, gaffing tape, and waterproof packing tape with which to design and build a craft. Then, two people from each team paddle their creation in races, with the winners of each heat advancing to the finals. Register your team here. Whether you help to build a kayak, or paddle it, or just watch, it’s bound to be hilariously exciting!

What’s your favorite City of Water Day activity?
