The Battle
The Battle was like no other in history at its time. Two armies assembled in northern France. On one side was the English and their allied troops. On the other side was the enemy. The English army was deployed facing south on a sloping hillside. The enemy immediately was at a disadvantage why you may ask well I’m so glad you did the English and allied troops were at an advantage because the enemy could not outflank them. The allied troops were well-feed and rested and the enemy was not.
On the other side of the coin the enemy outnumbered the English. The contingent of the enemy is not known other than they outnumbered the English by the thousands. The enemy began its attack around 4PM. When the advanced troops of the enemy came within range a cloudburst happened resulting in damage to the enemy’s weapons. As the English started defending the territory they held they inflicted heavy casualties on their enemy. As the front line troops began to retreat the vanguard of the enemy began to advance. When they saw their comrades retreating they began to hack them down.
The battle forever changed the way war was fought. What battle am I talking about well it was the Battle of Crecy fought in 1346 near Crecy France. It was an important English victory during the Hundred Years’ War. Why did the English win is another question you may ask? Again I’m so glad you did. It was the first time that the English longbow was used in battle. You see the French was using the crossbow which could not be loaded as fast as the longbow. The crossbow could discharge around 4 arrows in 30 seconds while the longbow could shoot 9. The losses in the battle are not complete but estimates suggest the French lost around 5,542 to 6,000 in the battle while the English lost an estimated 100-300 men. The French also employed the mounted troops however, the longbow could penetrate the armor of the French troops. Thus the mounted attack that had been commonplace forever changed after the battle.
Like real estate the ground rules are forever changing. So tell me are you keeping up with all the changes or are you still using horses to get you where you want to be. Word is there is a new machine called the automobile. I’ll need to check those out. What say you?
