Winter is almost here. That means local haunts like Mount Rose, Diamond Peak (Incline Village) and Northstar at Tahoe (Truckee) should be opening for business soon. National Geographic released their list of the Top 10 Emerging Ski Towns and Reno skiing made the list. In fact, they were only bested by Ogden, UT.

Mount Rose is just one of the local Reno skiing haunts that National Geographic named on its Top 10 Emerging Ski Towns list. Nearby Tahoe resorts helped.

Reno Skiing

Search Reno homes for saleThe experts at National Geographic looked for lesser-known destinations in North America to concentrate on. Locations like Jackson Hole, Telluride, Whistler, Aspen, and Vail tend to spring to mind when talking about the top places to ski. However, if you want great skiing without the huge crowds and expense, Reno skiing provides a great opportunity.

Mount Rose Ski Resort

Locals love Mount Rose. Located just 25 miles from downtown, beginners, intermediate and well-seasoned skiers hone their skills on these slopes each year. As of the writing of this post, Mount Rose plans on opening up on the weekends beginning next week. With a base elevation of 8260 feet, it avoids much of the rain that can spoil a good run. This leaves beautiful powder skiing virtually all season long at the Chutes.

Located Near Tahoe Resorts

No less than 18 ski resorts operate within a one hour drive from the Reno International Airport. Anyone flying commercial to a Tahoe resort must fly into Reno first. Kirkwood, Northstar, Heavenly, and Squaw Valley regularly make the Top 10 lists for the area. And, for entertainment off the slopes, Reno provides an active nightlife.
