"Don't tell anyone", he said. "It is none of their business."
My first deal over a million dollars and he says don't tell anyone.
For years the largest commission I ever received...even though I only got half because of the agency I worked with got stole the other half...and he doesn't want anyone to know?
"That's part of the deal", he said in his gravely voice back then.
I wanted to shout it from the rooftops...Mike McCann got Dale $374,000 more than the other company was going to list at...and yet zip...nada...keep quiet...nobody's business...not any thank you cards or thank you ad...no using him as a reference...no referral letter..."just let it go and move on", he said.
I told him, fine, I would give him 10 years of silence and then I was talking about it. It is now longer than ten years and this is the first time I have publicly talked about what Dale actually did with the proceeds.
You see...he gave it all away to a Christian overseas charity...over $1,000,000. And did not want anyone locally to know.
He did not have a great relationship locally back in the day.
He was contentious, and opinionated, and blunt, and had more sins in his back pocket than perhaps any man I know...and yet here he was giving it away.
He said he had a great rough and tumble life and that he needed to pay back for some of the things he had done.
I asked him if he was trying to buy his way into heaven and he said, "no, not really". But that he was not proud of everything he had done or how he had treated some people and some family.
I told him it was never too late to rebuild bridges. Of course he pretty much told me to mind my own business and of course I did not listen to that.
Dale has done a good job of staying his distance from most people and owns a ranch up in the beautiful Nebraska Sandhills that has limited phone service and he likes it that way. This week though he is back at his house in town.
His sale, and how I was treated by my Broker while conducting it, is the sole reason I re-opened my own company and yet I couldn't publicly thank him for it. Now I can and that is why we are meeting this week.
I spoke with Dale while typing this and I was supposed to meet with him later this morning but he moved it to tomorrow since his early Dr appointments got moved to later today.
Even though he is mostly retired, Dale has a rock solid reputation as a shrewd businessman badass where he lives.
To me, though, he is just a ornery client and distant friend. I look forward to see how much closer...or farther away...he has gotten to God and his family.
And I suspect that he will chew my butt for something that has nothing to do with me...and well...I will most likely laugh and tell him that he is an old, cantankerous a$$ and then we will both laugh and swap some another story...and if I am lucky...I will then take another sip of his thick, black coffee!!
Thanks Dale for the largest commission I earned in the first 15 years of my career and for being instrumental in my fantastic success this past 11 years!!
See you tomorrow...Until then...Keep an Open Mind!!
