Many of us do this everyday. We drive home, click a button and park our vehicles in the garage.

With another push of the button, our garage door closes and we enter the house, thinking our homes, cars, and personal safety are protected.

key to the house

We are wrong.

Last week, a Realtor friend had her car stolen from her garage while she slept. Imagine the shock of waking up and walking to the garage to find your car is missing! The thieves raised her garage door and stole her car because, as busy people sometimes do, she left her purse and keys in the car.

Before you rush to judgment, the garage door was closed and she thought she was safe. We have since learned crooks can enter a closed garage door and even ACCESS YOUR HOME if you don't lock the door entering the residence. As a Realtor, I've shown hundreds of homes where the back door is left unlocked for the owner's convenience.

So, in addition to properly securing your purse and keys, you should lock the garage door as well as the access door(s) to your home.

Don't assume this happened in a crime-ridden neighborhood. It did not. It could have happened anywhere.

For safety's sake, lock ALL doors to your home, including the one that leads to your home from your garage. Since this incident happened, I've been locking mine, and I hope you do, too.

The electronic lock on your garage door can be hacked. If your car is keyless, it can be hacked too. A neighbor gave me a couple of tips: keep your purse in your bedroom closet where it is not likely to be stolen, 2. triple click your car, it scrambles the signal, and put your key in a metal container where the signal is protected. If you leave your purse, keys, wallet in the car, kitchen, by the back door know that it can walk away.

This is good info to remember.  I would be in awe if this happened to me.  You cannot be too careful in this day and time.

My garage is secure, unless someone can guess my password to the garage door opener!  But I heard stories often with agents complaining about homes left unlocked after showings or with doors left open.  Never acceptable!
