An anode rod is the most important component that helps keep the water heater functioning. However, it might start deteriorating after a few months due to corrosion. You must keep a check on the rod to make sure that you replace it on time to avoid severe consequences later.

Here are a few tips mentioned to help you change a water heater anode rod.

Shut Off Water and Power Supply

First of all, you should shut off the main valves of water and power supply. If you have a gas heater, it would also have a “vacation” setting. You can turn that on during the replacement on anode rod. This way, you can work on your water heater safely. However, if you still fill like it is not your cup of tea, you can call a professional any moment.

Locate the Old Anode Rod

You should locate the old anode rod of your water heater to get it replaced. You might find it at the top or bottom side of the unit as it depends upon the type of water heater you have in your home. You can also consult the manual you get from the manufacturer to find the exact location of the anode rod. If nothing works for you, you can visit the online official website of the manufacturer.

Remove Old Anode Rod

You must remove the old anode rod effectively to replace it with a new and better one. You must have the necessary tools i.e. wrench, socket, breaker bar, and so many more which are required to carry out this process. If you try to tighten the rod slightly, it would help get it removed. Moreover, you should avoid using any liquid wrench that can contaminate the hot water. Also, if you don’t want the pipes to get leaked or broken, you should ask someone to hold the tank to prevent it from moving abruptly.

Install the New Anode Rod

You must purchase the compatible anode rod for your water heater system after analyzing the pros and cons of different anode rods. It is suggested to buy a powered anode rod that is quite different from other simple rods as it doesn’t wear off easily. You can also buy a flexible anode rod to get it fixed in your limited space. You should turn the rod clockwise while installing it until it stops turning around. You can also use a socket wrench to tighten it properly. However, you must make sure that the water heater doesn’t move during the installation process.

Turn on Water and Power Supply

Now you can turn on the water and power supply to see if the water heater is working properly or not. It would allow the air to release which you can notice through the weird noises of the faucets. You must keep the supply on until all air is removed. You cannot skip this step if you want the water to run freely.
