Arthur S. Jefferson was born in Ulverston, England back in 1890 to Arthur and Margaret.  He attended school at King James I Grammar School in Bishop and the King’s School in Tynemouth.  He moved with his parents to Glasgow Scotland completing his education at Rutherglen Academy.

In 1912, he worked in the Netherlands and Belgium as a comedy double act with Ted Desmond known as the Barto Brothers.  He moved to the United States where he registered for military service in 1917, he was not called up.  by 1924, he had given up the stage for full-time film work, in the movies.  In 1926, he signed up with the Hal Roach studio, as they say the rest is history.  In 1941, he signed with 20th Century-Fox to make ten films over five years.  In 1947, he returned to the United Kingdom where he performed in variety shows. He died in 1965, he was 74.

If you don’t know Arthur, maybe if you’re old enough you’ll know his stage name Stan Laurel, of Laurel and Hardy.

James - my father was a fan and I have seen many of their shorts.  They did their best work with Hal Roach because he let them do what they wanted.

Good morning James! How I used to love when they would show an old Laurel and Hardy short to fill the time gap after a short movie aired on TV

Oh no way! I didn't see that one coming, James!

Like many, I also loved Laurel & Hardy. That kind of clean, knee-smacking comedy seems to have fallen by the wayside. I very much miss the simpler, cleaner times!!
