Pets and Property Showings...

By
Real Estate Agent with JKA Properties (Meli G Realty & Investment Group)

Should you leave your pets loose when trying to sell your home? I had to show someone a house yesterday and the listing agent said "there is a small dog in the house, but friendly" I went in first to check that everything was OK and sure it was a small dog. The dog was sleeping peacefully on the sofa. He looked at me, no sound, no motion... I said to myself, OK, we can do this. I went outside to tell my client that everything was OK and we could go in. The husband proceeded to walk into the house but the wife simply refused to. No way - there is a dog in the house. It didn't matter how much we tried to convince her that it was just a small dog and very peaceful and well behaved. She would not go! So, the entire appointmet was wasted because of the dog! Did the dog do something wrong? NO. I had never seen any animal so well trained and well behaved, but nevertheless the buyer wouldn't go for it.

So to all pet owners out there, we know you love your pets and they're like part of the family, but doesn't mean that the buyers love your pets too. So, please invest in a small crate where your pet can be staying while we show your property. It will make things easier for everyone involved! What you see...What the others see...

I don't like animals and I am especially uncomfortable around animals I don't know.  I wouldn't even go into the house with the loose dog and i've had a couple clients who agree with me.  Pets definitely need to be removed or crated when the house is on the market.

Agreed.  Loose pets are a problem.  You just don't know what a dog will do when poked in the eye by a three year old or the tail pulled by a five year old or a just plain old scared real estate agent.

Good point. Not everyone is an animal lover- don't tell anyone but personally I would prefer a world without cats!

I am a pet owner, but personally would not want the animal in the house when showing, for reasons we all can imagine.  I know of a sale that was killed, because the owners left multiple dog crates in the home, and the husband a hunter had trophies mounted throughout the house.  The strong odor of many pets turned off the potential buyers.  Nothing personal to pet owners, just that everyone has different viewpoints and in this business its about attempting to appeal to the masses.

Just the other day I took an elderly couple to see a house. They loved the house and we went out to check the backyard. The poor woman almost had a heart attack. A huge dog came running from behind the shed and jumped on her almost knocking her on the ground. I had no idea there was a dog out there. SOMEBODY (the listing agent) forgot to write that info in the MLS. All three of us very carefully and as gently as we could move, walked backwards to the house. When I finally closed the door in the dogs face, I felt a great relief that nobody got hurt.
