When I work, I WORK!!!! But when I have a few days of freedom, I PLAY. Some weeks are 10 hour days or work....some weeks are 24 hour days of doing absolutely NOTHING.
I travel 4-5 times a year...mixing mini-trips like Sylvie enjoys, with 1 or 2 week vacations like Mirela favors.
But as soon as a customer needs me, I'm THERE for them...other than family, nothing is more important than my clientele.
Not a bad way to live...could never imagine retiring from this routine...My life is unpredictable, which suits me perfectly.
I'm with you Mirela. I believe in taking a completely proactive stance in what I want my life to be and become. I find that as I create myself, I find myself. :)
Pushing hard or what you want is great. Sometimes taking that hour or so off to have a little fun might reap even greater benefits. If you go boating or dancing with some "new" people it might just get you another listing or contract.
I think about all the Jr. Golf tournaments my son plays in, dance recitals for my daughter, paddling trips on local rivers tend to bring in more business over time.
Kinda like making work- play.
In reading all these comments, I realize that you guys are the co-writers of this blog. Your perspective is invaluable to rendering a more holistic view on this subject.
That's really why I enjoy blogging here on AR so very much: I have such intelligent readers who are so generous with their contributions. It helps me solidify a firmer grip on issues I'm grappling with. Thank you so very much!
One of the great misconceptions of my generation was the idea of 'finding yourself'. I know poeple from my college days that are still trying to 'find themselves'. Meanwhile they do nothing but sit around and smoke weed, contemplate their navels and bitch about how tough life is - always looking for the easy path. Meanwhile I've created myself and re-created myself numerous times. I created a 'corporate' Gino 35 years ago. He was OK but I got tired of him and his suits. So I created a 'Realtor' Gino 15 years ago and that's been great fun. Then I added a 'legislative advocate' & 'community leader' Gino 10 years ago and I figure I've still got a few more fun ones I want to try before I'm done. While none of these may be the complete and 'real me' I've found a lot of aspects of me that I wouldn't have otherwise. If you settle for a one dimensional you, you might be very happy but you'll never know how happy you might have been if you explore a little. Or maybe I'm just crazy, eh?
NOT at all, Gene. My life is very similar (or crazy). Though I can see myself selling real estate for the rest of my life, I must add that in the late-80s and early-90s, I use to say the exact thing about my passion for the video/film production business.
Exploration is what life is all about. Who knows, I might be a Scuba instructor 3 years from now...you never can tell!
Cheers!
Hi Mirlea,
I understand where you are coming from. However, I have a tendency to go and go and then I burn out. I am trying to learn the balance of moderating my pace and enjoy life along the way. Taking some pauses along the way gives me energy and helps me to enjoy my life more. It is easy to work hard all of the time when I love what I do and bring in the money. It takes a lot to be an Entreprenuer. It is a continual balancing act all of the time. However, when I do unplug it does help me be better the next day. Just my thoughts...
Have a Colorful Day!
Interesting post and comments. Many people have a need to find themselves, and look in the wrong places. Basically to find ones self is to look within, that said...we are a culmination of our thoughts and words put into action. We not only create who we are by our mindset, perceptions, desires and intentions. There is nothing wrong with pushing oneself towards attainment of goals. Actually when you stop to think about things, there truly is no right nor wrong. What works for one, may not be to the liking of another. Personally, I have been there allowing my work to push me to exhaustion. There will always be a To Do List, there will always be an emergency (based on someones definition) The key is BALANCE.... We live in a rush rush society, many professionals plan there life around work. (that was me in the past) Now I plan my work around my life.
Paul: I received your comment on my blackberry and had to get on here and tell you how much I enjoyed it. You are right: there is no right or wrong answer, and we may fit the bill one day, and not another...
Right after I wrote this post (the next day), after finishing a grueling week late Saturday, I left town and took a day and a half off. I was burnt out and in desperate need of R&R. I find that in spite of my ambitions, perseverance and high threshold for "pain", I sometimes drive myself too hard and push myself to the brink of exhaustion. When I do that I just have to step back and take time out to "recharge".
BALANCE is extremely important to me as well, and I make a valiant effort to attain it, although I must confess that I only succeed at it in "spurts"... It is a lofty goal indeed, but definitely one worth having...
Thank you for your savvy advice!
Although I sincerely appreciate all the comments, I must confess that I do not understand several of the anonymous comments here.
Chris: You are a passionate person, so anything you immerse yourself in, will be a labor of love. I've always advised my kids to just follow their hearts in choosing a career. When my son decided to go with a History major, many of his friends who were going the route of a Business degree tried to sway him in their direction. I told him to stay with his passion, for whatever you put your heart into, that endeavor will garner great results, regardless of what it is. "Follow your heart and the money will follow!"
Chris, I can see you being successful at anything you focus on. Your extraordinary sense of humor and your dynamic personality will garner the results. We are lucky to have you in Real Estate!
Irene: I followed your advice and took the much needed break Sunday and part of the day on Monday. I recharged with an out of town trip, some respite from the business and the company of good friends. I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Gene: As usual, you once again had me laughing ("contemplating their navels"... too funny!!!). How true, how true! I loved your view on the several versions of Gino created throughout the years. It is a very creative and accurate description. Thank you for your exceptional input!
Mirela: Thank you, just take things one day at time, or for you one spurt at a time,
Hi Mirela...It's interesting how success is measured differently by different people. We have our own ideas of what we consider success and sometimes it changes as we change.
A little contentment is a good thing also.
Here's to whatever brings you happiness.

Kate: Having contributors like yourself brings me happiness...
You've made some very good points!
