On The Road Again - Thanksgiving Travel

Found these photos while looking for something else. Note to self - You really need to catalog your photos in a more systematic way. They brought to mind traveling on holidays to see family and friends. That brought up the memory of a Thanksgiving trip to see my Mother.

We were living in Long Beach and my Mom lived in Palm Springs, a couple hour drive under good conditions. So, one Wednesday evening, after work, we got in the car and started on the drive for a Thanksgiving weekend with Mom. Five minutes to the 605, got on the freeway and headed north a few miles to the 91. Traffic was pretty normal for a day before a holiday, kind of heavy. Made the transition to the 91 heading east, and traffic was really heavy.

After a few miles we started slowing way down. then slower, and slower, and slower, then........stopped. We were stopped for several minutes, then started that creeping a few inches at a time, with the occasional car zipping by on the shoulder. OK, must be a wreck up ahead, it will clear up in a few minutes. Listening to the radio brought no information.

After 2 1/2 hours we hadn't made it 20 miles. We had a crying baby in the back seat (she is 20 now), and decided we would make it to an off-ramp and turn around. It took another hour to get back home. We tried again the next morning early and made it in regular time. This was before we had cell phones, so Mom was going crazy wondering where we were.

We are not traveling this year. My Mother is in assisted living here in Knoxville, and my Mother-in-law passed away a few years ago. I hope that those that are traveling find clear roads and good weather the entire way. These photos are obviously not from that trip, but a vision of what I would hope the roads will look like for people having to travel over the holiday.
