Hey, they blogged my name - Google Alerts

If you are like me, I'm sure you've read that you should sign up for Google Alerts. And, if you're like me, I'm sure you didn't think much of it (after all, you're BUSY right).

Well, one day I had a little time to kill so I signed up - just because I read from sources I trust that I should (thank you tomato coach guy). After that I merrily went on with my life, not thinking much about it, including blogging about 25 Free Programs for Fun and Business.

Imagine my surprise when I get an alert that someone blogged my name. Of course, I had to check it out. The guys at authorPoint, one of the 25 free programs I blogged about, got wind of my post and blogged to their readers that I had mentioned them. Needless to say, I was flattered. After all I'm just little ol' me, and they are a worldwide software company.

Anyway, back to business...what did I get out of it besides a warm fuzzy feeling? They gave me backlinks to my real estate photography site and my AR profile (for your SEO guys), and a great opportunity to tell you guys how great they are and how great Google Alerts is.

So, in closing, I strongly suggest you take a few minutes to set up Google Alerts on you and your company. You never know where you'll show up!

I've got to check this to see if I have set google alerts up.  There is so much ... it is confusing.  I have started writing all my sites, and important info down, so as I don't forget.

You're right. Plus you can always use it to see where you are getting the most traffic in your social networking efforts.

Hi Sandy,

Hope you and your family are doing well. Love the new pic of you and Matthew.

I signed up for this several months ago...I did my personal and business name. I also did one for staging in NWA. Keeps me up to date if anything is published on that subject. It's a great way to keep up with things you're interested in.

I missed your post on 25 Free Programs, I'll have to go back and read it.

Congratulations!  It's rewarding to be "found" on the internet, and then referenced by another!  Best wishes in 2009.

Be careful with the Google Alerts though!  I live by them because I use them to see when clients show up in Google.  But phishing e-mails have been sent to me based on my Google Alerts with links that will destroy your computer.  (I got the blue screen of death from one.)  So although they are extremely helpful, be careful of the links in the messages.

Hey Guys, Thanks for stopping by.

Renae,

I never thought of Google Alert phishing emails.  I get my alerts on Google Reader, so I should be OK there.  But I'm glad you mentioned it, hope it helps others.

Donna,

We are well - it's been crazy busy though - but that's good right.  Thanks about the photo - we had that made that morning before we did that shoot for you.  The day we were all dressed alike (like dorks).

Google alerts are great. I have just begun to use the system to track my elected government officials here in Brevard County Florida.  I get updates on legislation and other discussion specific to my chosen keywords.  But, as the response above mentions, be carful of the links and always consider the source.

Matthew & Sandy - I guess I never knew how google alerts could be beneficial, but your post is a good example of how you just never really know how something can benefit you.  I will check into google alerts and see what it takes to get signed up.  Congratulations on getting searched!

hi

Is google alerts just to let you know when your name appears on a blog? This internet stuff is a little scary sometimes. I cant hide anymore!

Charles & Troy - yep, it's a neat service

Jim - yeah, you just go to Google Alerts, and tell them what you want alerts for, could be your name, business name, competitors, or local market.  They'll send you an alert by email or RSS - which ever you prefer.
