Saints return to New Orleans

This Monday night, the New Orleans Saints return to the Louisiana Superdome for their first regular-season home game since Hurricane Katrina. Excitement is high as the 2-0 Saints take the field against the Atlanta Falcons. Season tickets are sold out, and fans are eager to see the results of the $185 million renovations.

As we tune in and celebrate with the Saints organization and the City of New Orleans, let's not forget how much more still needs to be done in the recovery effort. Don't forget about the Lower 9th, St. Bernard, Plaquemines and other devastated residential areas. ESPN's Joe Theismann says it best:

"I do believe in my heart of hearts that this region does not get enough of the attention that it deserves. I think that people feel like, 'OK, Bourbon Street is back up, the French Quarter is back up, New Orleans is back.' It's my job and it's our job to tell the world that New Orleans still has a long way to go."

I watched a documentary about two weeks ago that was filmed by a Red Cross volunteer and then that show followed by a documentary filmed from a main hospital.  I could NOT believe all of the things that people went through (A,B & C patients, couples being split up, markings on their foreheads to distinguish their "wellness").  You think you heard about everything...apparently I didn't hear nearly enough...I don't think most of the world did.

It made me so sad. I will be rooting for the saints this Monday night...otherwise it's GO BRONCOS!  :)

Great post John, as a visitor to New Orleans, I can testify that things aren't the way they used to be, not even close.  Go SAINTS!  Professional teams have a way of bringing the community back together, especially if they're winning!!!

There is more interest in this game than some superbowls. The dome is a loud place to play. Michael Vick has not lost to the Saints yet! They have a great running game. Let hope the game is in doubt till the end. Saints Fan.

Hmmm.... Of course, American Football solves everything, right? How about fixing the residential areas instead of rebuilding the stadium first? Check out my post on it...
