Monuements:
Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner
Situated on the Pecos River with a shady picnic area, this unique museum was designed by Navajo architect David Sloan. This memorial tells the story of the US Army forcibly moving the Navajo and Mescalero Apache Indians in the late 1800's.
Located in Bernalillo with fantastic views of the Rio Grande is the area that Francisco Vasquez De Coronado was looking for the Seven Cities of Gold. Instead he found the village of Kuaua. The visitor center designed by John Gaw Meem contains artifacts as well as hands-on exhibits.
El Camino Real International Heritage Center
Located in the Chihuahuan Desert, the newest state monument covers more than three hundred years of trade and commerce. Upcoming events include the Spring Fiesta with information booths, hands-on activities, and entertainment. Don't forget to check out "The Owl Café" located in historic San Antonio.
Established on the banks of the Rio Grande in 1865, this adobe fort was built to settlers and travelers. Upcoming events include "Day for Dad Living History Program," a special presentation, and "The 9th Annual Fort Selden Luminarias Tour" enjoy luminaria-lit trails as well as hot chocolate, cookies, and caroling.
A beautiful prehistoric site of a 500 year old Indian Village is located just 43 miles north of Bernalillo. The heritage center tells the story of the Jemez people with a 1,400 foot trail running through the site. Upcoming events include "Historic Preservation at Jemez" which includes demonstrations and staff-led tours.
The uniqueness of the Lincoln State Monument lies in the fact that it includes a whole town! There are 17 historic structures, six of which are open to the public. Stop off at the visitor's center for maps, information, and a gift shop. Upcoming events include "Old Lincoln Day Celebrations", three days of celebrations. Come see living historic demonstrations, a fiddlers contest, food, and even a parade!
