alan in austin: Sunday Thoughts...Authority - 08/16/14 11:04 PM

“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (Ro. 13:1)

Christian Herter was governor of Massachusetts in the mid 1950s. When he was campaigning hard for a second term of office, one day after a particularly busy day chasing votes and missing lunch, he arrived at a church barbeque. It was late in the afternoon, he was famished and as he moved down the serving line he handed … (10 comments)

alan in austin: Football thou long awaited respite...how have I missed thee? - 08/15/14 06:24 AM

Let me count the ways!

*I have missed thee on the High school fields, the college and professional domes and fields.
*I have missed the clashing of pads, the smell of grass and AstroTurf.
*I have missed the snack bar, the marching bands, the halftime shows
*Oh how I have missed the uniforms, the pageantry, the stadium lights and the announcer
*I have missed the smell of BBQ coming from tailgate grillers, I have missed the booming roar of the crowd when the home team scores.
*I have missed the play calling, the pass, the run, the fumble, the interception, … (5 comments)

alan in austin: Are you watching Shark Week? - 08/14/14 05:36 AM

I am fascinated. I was in a place of business yesterday waiting for the attendant and they had Shark Week on the TV. I found myself caught up in it. It would be incredible to be on some of these dives around sharks. I am not completely crazy there are some things they are doing that are way too risky for me.

The ones where they are not agitating or feeding the sharks but observing at a reasonable distance or inside a cage are more my speed. We all swim with sharks anytime we are in … (1 comments)

alan in austin: The problem with procrastination - 08/13/14 01:47 AM

Those frustrated looks you are receiving may be an attempt to communicate. The problem with procrastination is that those who do it as a life habit feel it is a victim-less crime. They believe they are only hurting themselves by forcing decisions and actions on their part to the last minute.
In truth we do not live isolated lives. We are connected in family and community and as human beings. So what we do or do not do on a daily basis has big and small impacts on our immediate world and eventually the global community.
Procrastination has a far … (3 comments)

alan in austin: SUNDAY THOUGHTS...finding YOUR home church! - 08/10/14 08:38 AM

How do you find the right church for you! There are some great churches in our community. In all honesty if I were not a pastor at one of them I would have a difficult time picking just one. I know many of the pastors in our area and am familiar with their church and mission. I would dearly love to just be a member in one of their churches. I think I would feel at home in any of them. But after all I am a pastor so I am happy just to be in church with people who love … (1 comments)

alan in austin: REMEMBER - 08/06/14 07:08 AM

One of my favorite authors is C.S. Lewis. He seemed to have his finger on the pulse of humanity. As he described his characters you would start picturing people in your life who were very much like this character. I love all his books but for some reason am always drawn back to "The Great Divorce". It is an easy read but deep with meaning.

alan in austin: WEDNESDAY WORDS - 08/05/14 11:12 PM

The Sea is a calming place for me. Whither on the waters, in the waters or watching from the beach there is a certain comfort in the sound, site and smell. It never gets boring. Everytime I go there are new discoveries. Something I had not seen before, a creature, a plant, a seashell. the discoveries seem endless.

I heard the story of a newly crowned Polynesian King. He had recently been converted to Christianity a year or so before his ceremony. Missionaries were allowed to build a small church in the village. They put a cross … (3 comments)

alan in austin: SUNDAY THOUGHTS... Because i said so - 08/03/14 02:26 PM
A Study on Authority

God places a high value on authority because He is the one who created it.
The Bible says that all authority comes from and originates with God. He is the absolute source of authority in the universe, and has delegated His principle of authority to mankind to maintain order in the world.

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God … (1 comments)

alan in austin: Keeping your sanity in an insane market - 08/01/14 02:43 PM

In the current Austin market things have been turned upside down. The norms of contract writing are no longer. It is go big or go home. Make your best offer or get run over by the person behind you who will do what you are just thinking about doing.
So how do you bring sanity into the situation for yourself:

1. Know what you can afford to spend. Do not be moved by emotion one way or another. You will find what you need if you can be patient and stick to the plan.
2. Enlist the help … (6 comments)

alan in austin: How would you like a raise at work? - 08/01/14 02:25 AM

How would you like a big fat raise? If you are valuable to your corporation you can be compensated accordingly. One of the keys to raising your value is to lower your EGO. Being submissive to the Authority around you can raise your value in the eyes of those who are empowered to raise your pay check.
Sound Good?
Well it is not easy and we are going to provide you with the tools to raise your value by teaching you the basics of Authority. Join us for a four week series at the Grace Place Austin. The series … (1 comments)

alan in austin: V.A.C.A.T.I.O.N in the summer time - 07/31/14 01:14 PM

A rare chance to turn work into a Vacation! Sent to the Emerald Coast to help with a store we were able to carve out time in the evenings and on the weekend to see some beautiful country. Any day at the beach is a really good day!

Some really great seafood in the evenings that included a crab bisque, lots of shrimp, red snapper and clams. Found a small beach town off the beaten path. Some really great artist made it their home and I picked up this piece to take to my home.
