Those of you that know me or have worked with me probably know that I actually I stay awake at night thinking about how to create value for our clients. A couple of events in the past week have made me think about his more then ever. In the course of doing business I often hear agents with other firms refer to the buyers and sellers they are working with as customers not clients. It was a pleasure and honor to be named as one of the few independent brokers to the top 100 Real Estate agents in the 2/27/09 addition of the Capital District Business Review. I couldn't have done it without the loyal support, friendship, and referrals from all my past clients and friends. So thank you! It amazes me the number of multi level marketer calls I have received in the past month. I have received multiple calls from Ambit energy, send out cards, and Primerica financial. They all start the same way, " with the downturn in real estate I am sure you could use some additional income" Sure who can't use additional income. However, the perception must be local Realtors are starving. Obviously someone somewhere decided Albany NY Realtors were a good target market. These may very well be great companies. I was going through some files today and found a piece of letterhead from a business my dad ran over 30 years ago and it really made me start thinking. My dad was a serial entrepreneur and ran a variety of businesses when he returned from the war. This included a book publishing and binding company as well as a travel agency. The travel agency became his pride and joy and he successfully sold it in the late 80's when he retired. I learned the many things while I was in China. However probably the most impressive thing I noted was the systematic and persistent sales people. It was absolutely amazing to watch. Being in sales I appreciate a good sales presentation probably more then most. However, the sales presentations I observed were simply masterful! Let me give you an example. One day we toured a Tea plantation. Now I know nothing about tea but I do know I didn't come to China to buy green tea. It's a call I am starting to get all too often. A buyer will call on one of my listings that they then find isn't suitable for them for one reason or another after a brief phone conversation. They indicate they are not working with a Realtor and will only work with the listing agent on a property. I think someone somewhere must have written a book telling buyers they will get a better deal calling listing agents directly. This is logic I don't comprehend.
