mardi gras: Spanish Town is the Oldest Neighborhood of homes in Baton Rouge LA - 02/24/17 11:19 AM
Spanish Town is the oldest subdivision of homes in the Baton Rouge Louisiana area, and it is home to the famous Spanish Town parade and its annual "flocking".

Tomorrow February 25, 2017, is the 37th year of the famous Spanish Town Mardi Gras parade that passes thru Spanish Town streets and thru the downtown Baton Rouge area.    Not only is the subdivision know as the oldest and one of the most histroic areas of town, but it's festivities are just as special.  Things kick off each year when the "flock" of pink flamingos lites on capital lake at dawn.

So check out the schedule, order some King Cakes and join … (2 comments)

mardi gras: Fat Tuesday...and King Cake the Last Hurrah! - 02/16/10 09:52 AM
Today the final parades wind thru Louisiana and surrounding states that have taken up the Mardi Gars fever.  While the parades and beads are fun, one of the most important items during this season is the King Cake.  It is fit that this king cake would be found everywhere and that people would indulge all during the Mardi Gras period of February.  Hummm.  Fat Tuesday.   That's how everyone is feeling about now, Fat.  All winding down to Ash Wednesday and fasting.
Allrecipes has a Mardi Gras King Cake you can make for your family.  The one who gets the plastic baby … (0 comments)

Last night began the parties around Louisiana that will continue well into Mardi Gras in cities like New Orleans and Baton Rouge and beyond celebrating the New Orleans Saints win at the Super Bowl last night.  Those of us here often take for granted that everyone doesn't know the history behind how things get started.  In one of my blog comments Gloria Todor shared that she googled "Who Dat Nation" and found an interesting overview in Wikipedia's Who Dat?.   It gives the history from swamp music to comedy routines.
This chant originated in the 1800's and early 1900's.  While there are … (0 comments)

Needless to say, we're a little excited down here in Louisiana today!  I got this video of Bourbon Street "Who Dat" celebration from one of my Twitter friends.  Listening to it you can't help but catch some of the excitement.
Over the next two weeks I am sure that all over the U.S. those who wish to catch it will learn all about the athletic abilities and strengths of this football team.  Our hats off to Tom Benson and the entire Saints team.  But what about the behind the scenes contributions of some of the players and this event to the … (6 comments)

mardi gras: Downtown Baton Rouge, LA, near Spanish Town, Historic Building - 09/18/08 12:44 PM
Spanish Town is a historic district around Spanish Town Road in Baton Rouge, the capital city of Louisiana.  Spanish Town was commissioned in 1805 when Baton Rouge was under the control of the Spanish government...and is believed to be the oldest neighborhood in Baton Rouge.  It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.  The community and surrounding subdivisions serve as"living history" by having an assembly of surviving structures ranging in date from 1823 to 1975.  The oldest structure is the Pino House (built 1823).  This diverse community in the heart of downtown Baton Rouge near the State Legislature … (3 comments)
