St. Matthews has several great parks within the community. The heart of the St. Matthews neighborhood is the award winning Brown Park. Brown Park holds many of the community events such as next month’s Light up St. Matthews and the recent 15th annual St. Matthews Halloween Festival that was a huge hit. When Brown Park isn’t hosting a huge neighborhood blow out, you can always find someone you know at the park using it’s many amenities. The St. Matthews community is home to some of my favorite restaurants. Living in St. Matthews I spend a lot of time eating, drinking, and shopping at the many great restaurants, bars, and boutiques in the neighborhood. Within several blocks there are a variety of restaurants serving delicious food. You can find everything from sandwich shops and bakeries to high end steakhouses and culturally unique cuisine all within the St. Matthews community. With a background as a park ranger, it’s not surprise that Stephen Brown loves nature. So when he and Anne Milligan moved to Louisville, they wanted to find a place with lots of trees. This led them to Fern Creek and a home surrounded by beautiful, tall trees and a couple koi ponds. The trees stayed but the koi ponds were taken out. These Fern Creek homeowners have made it their personal mission to grow native plants in their yard. Instead of stagnant koi ponds, they now have 83 different species of native plants on their land. March Madness is in full swing in Derby City! But it’s not just the dribbling of basketballs and the stunning progress of the Final Four-bound U of L Cardinals that has folks mad with excitement. Louisville real estate has also bounced back considerably from the effects of the housing bust that lowered home prices and triggered a national recession. Louisville night life moved from lukewarm to red hot back in 2004 when 4th Street Live opened its doors. The entertainment and retail complex located on prime downtown real estate between Mohammad Ali and Liberty on 4th Street is home to a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and store, and, as city officials announced this week, it will soon be welcoming one more. A bar to be called Tavern on Fourth, owned by East Coast Saloons who owns two other bars at 4th Street Live, will move into the second floor of the Kaufman Straus building after renovations are completed.
