hawaii information: The Island of Hawaii: Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, The Honu and Akaka Falls - 08/26/07 07:12 AM

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is located on the southern end of the island in the Ka'u district of the island of Hawaii aka "The Big Island".  Black Sand evolves from the ground lava and these black sand beaches are found around the areas where there are still active volcanoes.
The black sand actually has the term "black volcanic glass". When the lava flows into the ocean (which it is currently doing) then it chills and the glassy rinds shatter and in turn may form beaches with the tiny grains of black sand.
The Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is the easiest to access and is … (65 comments)

hawaii information: Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals: What about "All Those Years Ago"? - 08/22/07 05:38 AM

www.localism.com featured article
Hawaii is considered to be the "Endangered Species Capital of the World" with more than 317 plants and animal species that are endangered per sq. mile than anywhere else in the world.  The most endangered mammal that is on the endangered species list is the HAWAIIAN MONK SEAL and every day there is something on our local news stations about these precious creatures.
The Hawaiian Monk Seal usually lives around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (i.e. Midway Atoll,  Kure Atoll, French Frigate Shoals etc.) and because they are uninhabited and remote and very little human presence it is the perfect place to live for these easily … (53 comments)

hawaii information: Hawaii Home Buyer | Hawaii Home Seller | Hawaii Homes Market - 07/10/07 05:14 PM
When the Great Big Giant Real Estate Boom Balloon hit Hawaii it hit HARD!  Sellers were overpricing their homes for sale and they were selling like crazy! Buyers were overbidding and there was a bidding war like you wouldn't believe! And prices kept skyrocketing and buyers kept buying and sellers kept selling! And then.....there came a point when buyers could not afford the payments for a $600,000 home with 20% down! And...interest rates went up a little as well.
To give you an example of our market from 2003 to 2006 compared to our current market of 2007 the following statistics will show you what it … (33 comments)

hawaii information: HAWAIIAN Spirits and Superstitions - 05/23/07 04:16 PM

Another Localism Featured Post!......By Celeste "Sally" Cheeseman
The Hawaiian people and many different ethnic groups living in Hawaii are highly superstitious and believe in the spirits of their ancestors who walked the lands of our islands.  The history of Hawaii tells of our great warriors in battle and traveling along the paths along the ridges of mountains and valleys between them to get to the ocean.  They are called the "Night Marchers". They can be seen carrying torches to light their way along places where there were battlefields as well.
I have been a resident of Hawaii since 1967 and I have lived the majority of my life on Oahu … (34 comments)

hawaii information: Blogging about "VOG" in Hawaii - 05/23/07 01:22 PM
"VOG" is Volcanic Air Pollution.  Oahu experiences "VOG" when trade winds change direction after there has been volcanic action on the island of Hawaii or otherwise known as the Big Island.  The winds will blow this volcanic air pollution towards us and make our little world look all hazy.
Following are pictures I took today from down the street from where I live in Waipio Gentry on the island of Oahu and viewing the downtown Honolulu area. In the far background is Diamond Head and usually there is an unobstructed view with blue clear skies.
View from "Cliffside Villages" to Pearl Harbor to … (26 comments)
