eco: Highway Wind Farms - 04/29/07 09:30 PM
An Arizona architectural student came up with an idea for an alternative energy source that seems feasible. The student designed a highway wind turbine would harvest the wind created by fast-moving automobiles to send power back into the grid.
According to the student's calculations, each turbine would be able to generate 9,600kwh per year, which would be more than enough to power a few apartments, or, as he is proposing, more than a few community hubs along the freeway.

eco: Free Lightbulbs at Home Depot - 04/22/07 05:10 AM
In honor of Earth Day Home Depot is giving away one million compact flourescent lightbulbs.
"Home Depot estimates that its gesture alone will result in $12 million in annual energy saving costs and the reduction of 196 million pounds of Carbon Dioxide emissions--the equivalent of removing more than 70,000 cars from America's roadways--so just imagine what changing out all of your bulbs could do!"

eco: Benefits of being a Tree City USA city - 04/12/07 04:03 PM
Earlier this week I posted about my city, Alexandria, being name a Tree City USA city once again. There are many benefits but two that I would like to highlight are financial assistance and publicity.
Preference is sometimes given to Tree City USA communities over other communities when allocations of grant money are made for trees or forestry programs. The reason is that there are invariably more requests than available funds when grants are available through state or federal agencies. If requests are equally worthy, some officials tend to have more confidence in communities that have demonstrated the foresight of becoming a … (0 comments)

eco: Tree City USA - 04/11/07 12:16 AM
Alexandria has once again been designated a Tree City USA city. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
To qualify for Tree City USA, a town or city must meet four standards established by The National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters.
These standards were established to ensure that every qualifying community would have a viable tree management plan and program.
A Tree Board or Department
A Tree Care Ordinance
A Community Forestry Program With an Annual Budget of at … (0 comments)

In my home of Alexandria, people can receive a variety of locally grown produce, carefully boxed and delivered weekly to a location in downtown Alexandria. This service is offered by Ploughshare Farm, which is located in Parkers Prairie (a small city located north of Alexandria). You will sample over 100 varieties of certified organic (MOSA) vegetables, fruits and herbs.  Each week's delivery yields its own unique harvest including staple veggies, plus a healthy dose of the exotic and novel. Deliveries start in early June and continues weekly through October.

eco: Paying up for the environment? - 02/06/07 08:14 AM
According to BusinessWeek, people are talking the talk but not walking the walk when it comes to environmentally friendly decisions in home building. BW reports that KB Home offered houses built with ecofriendly woods such as bamboo in Pleasanton, California. On a $700,000 home, this only bumped the price up by $3,500 but buyers weren't interested. BW says that the "green-home" market might get a boost this year because of recently introduced government subsidies and more stringent building codes. A stumbling block appears to be getting the information about these government benefits to the public. After 30 minutes of searching using … (2 comments)
