the villages fl: Are You Considering a Lifestyle Property? - 01/12/24 04:41 AM

Choosing the right neighborhood is one of the most important decisions a person makes in their adult life, because a house in not only a significant financial investment, it's a health investment.  Lifestyle Property is a phrase that you've perhaps heard lately. But what does it actually mean?
A lifestyle property is a home that has one or more unique features that help improve daily quality of life.  The right house for you is the house that best meets your unique needs and is within the parameters of your budget.
For example, if you enjoy taking an after-dinner stroll each evening, then moving into a … (15 comments)

the villages fl: The Villages, Florida Croquet Club - 01/11/24 04:43 AM

I have shared about some of the 3,100+ clubs in The Villages, Florida well here is another one, The Villages Croquet Club!  The Villages Croquet Club is a member of the United States Croquet Association and has a certified instructor.  The dues are $20 a year per member and members must wear white in the traditional croquet manner.  The club has two courts which is about ½ mile from my home and they play from noon until dusk Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

the villages fl: Tree Removal Companies, Beware of Scams - 01/09/24 01:24 PM

I was sitting in my house and I heard the cracking sound of a tree falling, oh no thankfully not mine but a neighbor’s tree.  A large limb did fall on my yard but no big deal as no damage.  My neighbor is one to get prices so she jumped online and Googled “Tree Cutters Nearby”, looked at the reviews, check to be sure insured and licensed and called two of them.  First one was $850 to cut up and remove, the next one was $650, she called the first one who seemed to be the best choice and offered him … (13 comments)

the villages fl: Have you Heard of Gasparilla? - 01/07/24 01:54 PM

Back in 2010 a friend asked if I wanted to go Gasparilla and I said sure, what is it?  I had so much fun I went back to Tampa again the following year.  What is Gasparilla?  Gasparilla is Tampa’s signature event, celebrated annually since 1904 and hosted by Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla.  Each year, a merry band of pirates invades the city, culminating in a celebratory parade down Tampa’s famed Bayshore Boulevard.  The first year I attended we had reservations at the convention center for a table which included brunch and that is where the pirate ship docks and takes … (16 comments)

the villages fl: Blue Hairs in The Villages, Florida, I Don’t Think So! - 01/06/24 08:00 AM

Recently a friend said “How’s life in Blue Hair Land”, of course I jumped all over him and explained there isn’t such a thing in The Villages, Florida.  I told him come down here and let’s go to the squares, how about the pools or Pickleball courts, he knew he hit a nerve.  This inspired me to look up The Villages’ South of Sixty Club, this from their website:
The Villages' South of Sixty Club is a social club that welcomes individuals and couples where one or both of the spouses/partners are over 40 and under 60.  All members must reside (own … (16 comments)

the villages fl: Vincent’s Italian Restaurant in Tangerine, Florida - 01/05/24 06:04 PM

I love dining outside the bubble (what we call The Villages, FL), I also love eating at out of the way family owned restaurants not recently built so have character.  We found a new one.  Last Friday we were leaving Orlando about rush hour and decided to take US 441 rather than the turnpike home.  It was about dinner time so start looking, we found an Italian Restaurant between Mount Dora and Zellwoood the sign said Tangerine, Florida but they have a Mount Dora mailing address.  We stopped and here is their story:
Vincent’s Italian Restaurant is a Mount Dora icon that … (8 comments)

the villages fl: Super Bowl Party and You are Invited! - 01/04/24 06:32 PM

Yes, I am inviting a few thousand friends to my house and maybe solving a problem most football fans experience at Super Bowl Parties.
The problem with Super Bowl Parties is some want to watch the game others are there for socializing, watching commercials and Halftime Show.  We decided we have a solution, 3 different viewing areas including an Outdoor Experience, game watching and those who come to socialize.  Another problem with Super Bowl Parties is a bunch of people in a small area, we have room for at least 100 people with 3 viewing areas.  Think Football Food and bring it … (11 comments)

the villages fl: The Seasons in The Villages, FL and How to Handle - 01/03/24 10:37 AM

Who says we don’t have seasons in The Villages, Florida?  We do we have three of them Peak which is January, February and March, Shoulder which is April, November and December and Summer which are the other six months.  I moved here in September 13 years ago not knowing about the seasons, at first walk in any restaurant, business or the squares and no crowds or lines.  Starting in November I noticed an uptick in people and come January where did all these people come from!  In my article yesterday I realize for us to have what we have here we … (11 comments)

the villages fl: Welcome Back Snowbirds and Thank You for Coming! - 01/02/24 03:18 PM

This time of year, I hear complaining about snowbirds coming to The Villages, Florida, me I am happy they are here and will explain why shortly.  It is estimated the population of The Villages grows about 30% from summer to peak season with is January, February and March.  So now we are looking at about 155,000 people in The Villages.
The Villages is expanding with more golf courses, Pickleball courts, pools, rec centers, retail, dining and entertainment which means during the off season we have more for the full-time residents.  Many of our businesses need the peak season to survive, many … (14 comments)

the villages fl: Housing Market in The Villages, Florida 2024 - 01/01/24 09:05 AM

Here we go time to make predictions on what I personally believe will happen to the housing market in The Villages, Florida.  First The Villages is a microcosm when it comes to housing, we have a tendency to buck national trends due to the unique housing market offered here.  Another factor we see a lot of cash sales and non-standard 80/20 mortgages as many times it is 50/50 mortgages with folks putting 50% down and when their home sells someplace else pay it off.  Another factor is people have a date circled on the calendar when they plan on moving to … (8 comments)

the villages fl: What did You Watch Drop Last Night? - 01/01/24 05:01 AM

So, what did you watch drop last night?  For many it was your eye lids, reading this list I thought The Villages, Florida should drop a Golf Ball or Pickleball or maybe both, heck we got three town squares.  I guess The Villages would have a drop at 9:00 pm as that is the time things shut down here.  I am guessing 9:00 pm is the new midnight in this retirement community!  Here’s some drops you might have missed!
Giant Key Drop — Frederick, Maryland Watermelon Drop — Vincennes, Indiana The To Go Cup — Savannah, Georgia Crab drop — Easton, Maryland Bologna Drop - Lebanon, … (6 comments)

the villages fl: What’s Your New Year’s Tradition? - 12/30/23 05:27 AM

What made me Google “Strange New Year’s Traditions” I have no idea but there goes 10 minutes of my life I will never get back.  On the other hand, it did give me a topic to write about today!
Broken Plates in Denmark
Broken dishes at your front door, it seems people save unused dishes the entire year and at New Year’s they hurl them at your front door as a sign of affection.  “Think I would rather have a bottle of wine!”
Scarecrow Burning in Ecuador
You make a scarecrow out of papers and photos from the last year you want out of your … (11 comments)

the villages fl: Finally, Spanish Springs and Call it a Night - 12/29/23 07:50 AM

The third article in the series on New Year’s Eve activities in The Villages, Florida.  Back to where it all began Spanish Springs Town Square where the longest performing in my opinion tightest band will be providing the NYE entertainment Rocky and The Rollers.  From Doo Wop to Rock N Roll it will be a great show and I bet you find yourself singing along and either up dancing or dancing in your chair!
Remember my first article when I mentioned you might want to pack outfits?  You started dressed in the 80’s, next the 60’s British Invasion and your last stop … (7 comments)

the villages fl: New Year’s Eve Brownwood and Lake Sumter Landing! - 12/28/23 05:47 AM

My second article about New Year’s Eve in The Villages, Florida, Brownwood Paddock Square next.  We started at Sawgrass Grove and with the 80’s working our way north through The Villages so what does Brownwood have in store?  Oh, this is a good one, the 60’s until today with The Hooligans British Invasion band.  Maybe consider switching your 80’s outfit to a 60’s British style outfit. The Hooligans are a Village favorite and expect a great time with them playing the hits.
Take in a set with them and move a little further north to Lake Sumter Landing Market Square where High … (8 comments)

the villages fl: Geckos Good, Bugs Bad! - 12/26/23 06:29 PM

One of the new owners that bought a home without visiting The Villages or even Florida called concerned about these little creatures that kinda look like very small baby alligators, they are all over the place!  This was their first experience with Geckos and we told them they are harmless and good to have around as they eat mosquitos, spiders and ants and here in Florida anything that eats bugs is a good thing!
I decided to Google Florida Geckos and it is complicated, some sites say we have 10 types of Geckos, others 12, 15, 17 and the most 18 types, … (10 comments)

the villages fl: Merry Christmas to All - 12/24/23 04:41 AM

Christmas for me is a time to reflect on the years gone by and be thankful for where I am today and the people that I have made the journey with.  My family time in Waynesboro, PA as a small boy walking out of our church at 11:00 pm after candle light service on Christmas Eve and snow falling, waking up Christmas morning to the excitement of what was under the tree.  Later my sons seeing the same excitement in them I had experienced.  One year flying north early Christmas morning to be there when my grandchildren open their presents.

the villages fl: Willie Jewell’s Old School Bar-B-Q - 12/22/23 02:44 PM

I had a meeting recently with some folks and they picked Willie Jewell’s Old School Bar-B-Q to meet.  Willie Jewell’s is in the southern end of The Villages, Florida just past the turnpike just off of Warm Springs Avenue, an easy drive down Morse or in my case I was close to US 301 so came in that way.  It was kind of a business meeting and decided on what to order based on how big of a mess I would make which doing BBQ I can do!
There four of us and everybody at the table enjoyed their meal, me I … (8 comments)
