On July 15th at 1:30 PM the Society will host Michael S. Showalter, museum educator at the historic Ephrata Cloister. Showalter will present “Room Enough for Them All: The People of Lancaster County on the Eve of the Revolution.” Using tax records, church histories, travel accounts, local histories, and family traditions, Showalter will offer information about the early residents of Lancaster County, PA.

The Southern Lancaster County Historical Society will present “Stealing Freedom along the Mason – Dixon Line” on Saturday November 19, at 1:30 PM at the Solanco Historical Archives Building at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA. Local historian and author Milt Diggins will be the presenter.
Maryland and Pennsylvania debated over the differences between slave catching and kidnapping. The arguments were punctuated with sporadic violence. The story of Thomas McCreary and his Cecil County Community provides a framework to explain the controversy between Pennsylvania and Maryland a decade before the Civil War.

The Society will present “Along the Scenic Octoraro Creek” Local Quarryville historians and authors Mike Roth and Stanley White will present a pictorial history of the area in and around Lake Octoraro. They will show scenes from before the lake was made. The area has included iron foundries, flour mills, paper mills, saw mills, and farmland. Currently it is a favorite location for fishing, camping, and hunting.

Kenneth Hoak, Quarryville artist and educator, will talk about his many years of interaction with Carlson. Carlson was a local artist. The program will be free and open to the public.
